on the topic of trading items...
To help curb abuse, perhaps enforcing a give-and-take would work. Items must be exchanged one-for-one. Also, some sort of "item level" could be enforced, so that I couldn't trade my Black Scroll and receive a Simple Scroll in return.

I don't know about forcing an item level. That could take away "skill" say, the yasuki merchants have in getting the better end of a deal.

I dont like the idea of trading items, the potential for abuse is huge. Same with duels that have real penalties for refusing or losing. However, dueling as a simple competition would be cool. In the same location, along class lines, makes the most sense to me. Bracketed by level (1-20, 20-40, etc.) a player in a given location could challenge another player of comparable class to a competition- set their equipment as wanted, issue the challenge and roll at that point. The challenged player could then see the challenge and determine if they want to accept. If they refuse, yeah maybe a minor penalty, -Glory but not Honor. If they accept, then they set their equipment as needed and roll. So, my Bayushi Courtier is slinking around Kyuden Otomo. I click Interact and see a Doji Courtier of similar level there. I set my equipment to the Court outfit, then click the Interact->Challenge button. The game records my roll and I can move on. Then, when the Doji Courtier logs on, they're laerted that they have a challenge. They click on it, see my name and level. The Courtier decides to accept so she equips her Court stuff, and clicks Interact->Accept Challenge. The game rolls for her, compares it to my roll. Say she wins, she'd get an amount of XP ang Glory based on our level bracket, and moves on. So, eventually I log back on and in the same way as I suggested the Crane player has an alert that she had a challenge, I have an alert telling me the outcome of our challenge. Now say she had refused my duel. Well, it still cost me Fate, which is not refunded. It also should cost a fair amount of Fate to issue a challenge, but not necessarily as much to accept. Challenges should also expire in 24 hours, and be void if the challenged move to another location. Maybe Iaijutsu challenges can come from all players to all players, still keeping level bracketing in mind, reserving Kenjutsu for Bushi characters. I also realize this leaves out some character classes, such as Kaiu Engineers, and I don't know how to account for that. I also really like Kaiu Tekkusu's suggestion of Major Events. All of this though would be helped by a means to browse other players to a degree. I'm suggesting a directory in which you could search all players and see their clan, class, level, and challenge stats- not the skill but their record. I also don't want that to be a way to cruise people FB accounts.

I also think that a way to do bad stuff to other players should be developped like poisining ( takes off so stats for a day or two), bragging or saying false rumors about another player, blackmailing another player, duel, etc...

Competative ways could include spending fate/koku/items to create a random encounter for people (as had previously been suggested, passing random encounters onto others, or furnishing the rumours to make someone encounter such problems).
Trading is indeed something that could be very tricky to balance, although I would make sure that any trade between players costs both fate and/or koku, if only to limit the ability of people to flood others with all the items they will need to do X or Y.
I like the idea about big events, and cooperative roles - which have an impact (ie, failure resulting in an increased chance of bad random encounters or something for those that got involved).

Samurai have very short tempers, but killing another samurai in an unsancioned duel is dishonorable - I think nonlethal duels are incredible appropriate. Duels that are not to-the-death are an everyday occurrence in Rokugan. Consider two Samurai who meet on the road, or better yet - a slender bridge. The drop into Iaijutsu stances to determine which is the better duelist. The lesser man then steps aside in favor of the winner.

Thanks Kuni Kaymar and Bayushi Trevron for liking my suggestion. Since the interract option already lets you see who is there, being able to see who has the Major Quest for that location, I would think, would not be much harder than the stats that are already available. There used to be an adult "door game" from way back that would wait until enough people had requested said event it would send a confirmation notice and then said event would be performed. DON'T JUDGE ME I WAS YOUNG!!! lol. The point is...If they could do something like that back in the text based door game days It should be relatively "simple" now days.
