Sojiro arrived to the waiting area slightly behind Quarim, followed by Kazekoto. He took note of the young phoenix there and bowed.
"Greetings, san. I am Kakita Sojiro. This is Tsi Kazekoto, and Quarim, a gaijin from the burning sands."
The young man looked like he was about to reply when Izutsu arrived and ushered the group into his office.
"Izutsu-san, it's an honor to meet you. I am Kakita Sojiro." He bowed deeply to the jade magistrate.

I had bowed to these newcomers and was about to introduce myself formally when I noticed the purposeful figure in bright red striding into the room. I looked over to him and took a moment to admire his kimono. It is not often noticed by many samurai, but Hare Clan Red and Phoenix Clan Red are two distinct shades that are produced by different dyes. In fact there are entire families of red coloring which bear proper artistic consideration if one has the time. In Phoenix lands, what we usually refer to as the heraldic red color used in formal garments is actually more of a vermillion and is the burning bright red of the setting sun. Side by side next to the deep blood red of the Hare Clan, this so-called Phoenix Red can even appear almost orange. I do not often get to see such magnificent colors as both reds are difficult to produce and both fade quickly if not properly cared for. It seemed to me that this man in his fine kimono had only just recently had this one made. Most likely it was specifically commissioned for this season’s court.
I shook myself from my revelry as the Hare samurai moved closer and greeted our informal group. After he introduced himself we followed him into his office where I bowed deeply to the Hare who wore the trappings of a Jade Magistrate.
“Your honor and my lord Hare I am honored to meet you. My name is Isawa Mitsuru of the Phoenix Clan. I am a Void Ishi of the first ring and student to Master Isawa Gomaru. I have asked to be included in an investigation concerning the untimely demise of a Lion samurai. It is my humble hope that I can be of service to your honor in finding supernatural evidence surrounding this unfortunate circumstance.”
Like many Phoenix, I did not particularly care for the existence of the Jade Magistrates. It is something of a bruise to the Phoenix ego that such an office is considered necessary when our own shugenja are more than capable of policing magic not only within our own clan, but throughout the empire. However, it is rude to communicate such sentiments to the man who has very kindly allowed you to join his search for a killer.
After my introduction I took my place on the floor waiting for tea, and hoped that this magistrate would explain why such a wide ranging group of samurai was required for the business at hand.

After all the proper introductions were made, Izutsu gestured for everyone to sit down on cushions around a table, and as they did so an aide appeared out of a side room, pouring everyone a cup of tea and leaving the pot in the center of the circle. Two guards dressed in the armor of the Jade Legion also entered, one taking up position shortly behind the Hare magistrate and the other behind the gaijin, Quarim.
He took a sip of his tea, his dark eyes sweeping the room once again, landing on Mitsuru, whom he regarded for a moment before answering. "Well, Isawa-san, I received word from Agasha Shodai this morning requesting your involvement in a matter that I had only just learned of myself." He frowned for a moment, and glanced towards Quarim. "It is a matter that I would have though would be the province of the Emerald Magistrates, but for information that I now need from you, Kakita-san."
He looked towards Sojiro with a sort of cold inquisitiveness in his eyes, and looked to Quarim again as well. "This is, I believe, when you tell me why we are all here."

"It came to my attention awhile ago that the fan of Kakita Mitsouko-sama, my daimyo, was found beside the body of a murdered Lion samurai. Given her recent health concerns, she asked me to take care of this matter for her and to see to it that the magistrates in charge were given anything they needed to assist their investigation, as Mitsouko-sama had given her fan away to this man, Quarim-san, earlier that day during a round of the fan game at court. After discussing it with Quarim-san, I discovered that he apparently gave the fan to one Daigotsu Yoee, formerly Moto Yoee, the recently fallen former Khan of the Unicorn clan. Yoee was a potent warrior before he began his maho usage, and his presence here in Kyuden Otomo is something that I don't feel the Emerald Magistrates are properly equipped to deal with."

He nodded his head to the Tsi as he held his silence through Sojiro's story, brows furrowed as though he were in a deep concentration. The silence held for a few moments after the Crane finished before Izutsu broke it. "I know of Yoee; I was there when the message for his capture went out from this very city. That he would be here, now," His gaze shot towards Quarim, a steely viciousness there, "is practically impossible, though stranger things have happened. I wonder, though. How did you come to know of this man, gaijin?" His voice was cold and hard, as a hammer on steel, and the mood in the room was suddenly dark and ominous.

Quarim knew this game all too well. He would be analyzed for any details that might indicate he was lying.
It is as I was telling the esteemed magistrate here, Sojiro, he was looking at our scimitars. I approached him and tried to negotiate a sale. He was wearing a black riding cloak. You know the kind that protects one from the wind? I assumed he was a spider because of the color and asked him so and he told me he was and gave me his name.
I gave him Mitsouko's fan because I was trying to attain favor from his clan. I did not know at the time they were so hated. I just thought they were a minor clan seeking more power. I thought I could help. If I helped a minor clan on their way to the greatness of a major clan then a great debt would be owed to me.
I also saw another member of the Spider wondering around earlier in the day. A much smaller man. Perhaps he can lead us to Yoee, assuming we do not find him first.

Kazekoto begain to make his way slowly, slipping to Kakita Sojiro right side. I have heard much of this Moto Yoee character, thought he might behind much trouble, there are deeper roots and pieces at play. So we hunt the Monsters… With deep thought, Kazekoto eyes began to fade… Kazekoto knew his place, it was watch and learns from those more highly trained then him and to assist where he could. A gnawing thought... there was something odd about this Quarim guy, with his dress, look and speach. Kazekoto ever observant waited …

“So, it seems we are decided to pursue the former Moto Yoee as our primary suspect then? If he is indeed infested with the Taint of the Shadowlands, then perhaps I can be of assistance. I think I can develop a simple ritual to search the area of the palace for the taint, if that were all right with the honorable magistrate.”
I bowed a little form my sitting position to emphasize my deference to the Jade Magistrate in this request.

Every word out of the gaijin's mouth was absorbed by Izutsu, his cold glare never wavering from the man as others chimed in with their opinions. A moment passed before he moved, turning towards Mitsuru. "Thank you, Isawa-san, but that will not be necessary yet. I know of the one man that he speaks of; my people are already watching him. I will have him taken into custody immediately and quietly." He nodded to one of the guards by the door, and he immediately exited.
His gaze swept around the room once more, appraising each of them with a cold, calculating eye. "As for Yoee, I am finding one part of this story problematic." He looked to Quarim once again. "If he is grown as powerful as people say he has, there are precautions in place that would have detected him. This is the Emperor's winter court, after all. I do, however, concede that it is possible that there may be an agent of his here who has assumed his name, though I find it highly unlikely."
His eyes spoke of a dark jadedness that came with doing this very thing for years, following false leads, people blaming their crimes on maho users, but there was also fire there. This man did this because he felt it was his true duty, and his zeal was such that nothing would stand in his way. "Sojiro-san, I am afraid that I am going to have to cut this meeting short; I have another urgent appointment. I am leaving you in charge of accompanying this gaijin, for I wish the four of you to return to court and look for Yoee, if indeed he is there. You will be accompanied by my two guards." He finished his tea, before reaching into a bag by his side and pulling out a scroll case bearing the mon of the Jade Magistrates that he handed to Sojiro.
"But first, I would like you to go interrogate this man we have taken into capture. I wish I had someone else to send with you, but my resources are stretched thin as it is. This papers, as well as my guards, bear the word that you act on my authority, in case any of the Otomo try and get uppity." He grinned a little, but it was gone in a flash. Izutsu grew serious again, and he returned his attentions once again to the man from the Burning Sands. "I do not trust this man, and I would warn you not to either. You have my authority to deal with him if he becomes a problem."

Quarim knew he had not given away anything in his body language to this man. He was careful of every tiny movement he made to not give away even the smallest hint. But Usagi Izutsu was clever and picked up on the circumstance of the event.
Quarim suspected that this Jade Magistrate knew he was the killer, but could prove nothing. It didn't matter to him either way. Usagi Izutsu had given him a valuable piece of information as well. ...my resources are stretched thin...
Having his attention on Mitsouko and this crime was too much. It also seemed quite a few other people had business with him, although to what means Quarim was unsure of. What he was sure of was that Izutsu could not handle both investigations simultaneously.
Quarim knew Izutsu would have to choose between his high level of scrutiny on Mitsouko or investigating the "sudden Spider appearance" at Winter Court. It is why he killed the man to begin with. Although he was surprised when Izutsu decided to hand the investigation over to Sojiro. Quarim was pleased however by the fact that Sojiro would be much easier to control than the Jade Magistrate.
I hope my cooperation and assistance in this matter will alleviate any mistrust. I assure you I have no mercy for those who bear the Taint. And would see them dead.

Sojiro didn't need to say anything - Izutsu could tell just by the expression on his face that the Crane had similar questions about Yoee's mysterious appearance.
"I will keep an eye on Quarim-san. For now, please take us to the man you have captured. The sooner we make him talk, the sooner we can move on to other areas of investigation."
His gaze swiveled to the Phoenix.
"San, in my travels I have learned of certain magics that will render it impossible to tell a lie inside of a certain area. If you were privy to such magics, I would very much be in your debt in this matter."

I rose from my sitting position, as it seemed that we were ready to adjourn. I stroked my decidedly beardless chin while contemplating a response to Sojiro’s question.
“I believe I know which prayers you refer to, Kakita-san. Sadly, while my focus of study is in detection magic I am unacquainted with this particular incantation.”
I blushed a little at my own irresponsibility, thinking about how I ought to have already learned this spell.
“However,” I chimed in before he could register disapproval, “I do know a similar piece of magic that may yet be helpful. Within the first ring magics of the Void there is a spell that gives one insight into the mind and feelings of a given person. If I’m not mistaken, we might be able to apply this in a form of lie detection. What exactly do you propose to do, my lord?”

"I propose we use your lie detecting spell to question everyone we currently have involved with the murder, so that we are sure nothing is left out of a testimony or hidden from us."
He turned his head and looked at the gaijin.
"And I do mean everyone, not just the man in Izutsu-sama's custody."

Quarim went from being very pleasant and extremely serious very quickly.
I am afraid I cannot allow that. I worked very closely with the Sultan concerning this trade endeavor. I have knowledge of Torturi's camp and movement plans. And just as any samurai I am bound by my loyalty to all parties to remain neutral. I cannot allow anyone inside my head regardless of the reason.
Quarim stood from his chair and looked at each man in the room very slowly. I have agreed to assist in tracking down a killer. If such assistance is not desired or required then perhaps it is best that I leave. Unless you have some form of evidence that can prove that I am lying and intend to hold me against my will.
