"Yes indeed, the winters here can be harsh and cold... but as winter gives way to spring, and the snow turns to rain, I personally consider the Phoenix lands to be the most beautiful during this time...but you are right, there is great concern at hand with the Yobanjin."
Kinen listened quietly as Mikado spoke of the treaty for the Three Sides River. When she finished explaining the situation, he turned to Kohaku. "Kohaku, was there something about this at Winter Court?"
Kohaku nodded. "Somewhat. Currently there is much debate over this partiuclar stretch of land. The Lion clan claims it has always belonged to them, while the Crane clan claims they have utilized the rice output the best. The Scorpion too have some claim in the land, but most of the debate is between the Lion and Crane."
Kinen nodded as a reply to his wife and smiled. The shugenja sat, and spent a moment gazing into the fire. "Casting aside personal opinion, I feel comfortable saying that our clan does not support the Lion in this. I feel our clan's opinion would be split between you, the Crane and the Scorpion.
"The Scorpion would definitely be the best decision for a peaceful resolution in the matter of Three Sides River. I imagine a good number of our clansmen would rather see the land go to our brother-clan." He said, making a reference to the fact that Shiba and Bayushi were siblings.
"However, with the Yobanjin invasions, I personally believe that you are correct, that the land should go to the Crane. In my time in the Crab lands, I once heard a general say this: all armies must be kept not only armed and trained, but fed as well. A starving soldier is a weak soldier.
"Since this invasion seems unavoidable by this point, I would agree that the Three Sides River should go to the Crane. If you can maintain such an bounty of rice, then our armies will indeed have enough food to continue fighting. In addition, your promises to maintain the trade routes sound very appealing to the empire. I shall talk to Isawa Tadaka-sama later, and perhaps the other members of the Elemental Council, and see if our clan can support the Crane for the Three Sides River."
