OOC ((It's not a Hida but a Morrito shapeshifter, you can edit that if you want, no biggie XD))
The evening gave way to the endless starry skies on that clear night as many of the samurai went about their business. A particular samurai-ko emerging from another one of the planning tents as she made her way to one of the fire pits that had been left to burn out.
She however placed down another log to stoke the flames for now as the evening breeze blew over. Her hardened eyes and stained armor seemed to show that she was one of the many who took on much of the front line action, not shying away from the danger of such possible injury and even death.
Quietly a few rumors had gotten around the camp about her efforts, as she seemed to be attempting to slay the greatest amount of yobanjin, but after the conflict was finally over would there be any way of accounting for it all.
This was Utaku Haruka, immediately recognizable by her horse at her side. A grey mare of the Utaku steed breed loyally grazing by her side and ready for battle at a moment's notice. But for now the two sat almost strangely tranquil in the evening as they took some time to rest from the fighting. The fight had been relentless on them all, and though she'd taken to a few errands on the side, Haruka just as ruthlessly dedicated herself on holding the defenses and driving the yobanjin back as much as possible.
But for the moment her deep thoughts were silent for the moment as she merely held a small crystal, the chain of it going around her neck as she held it close to her for the time being. A strange gift inside of a letter she had little clue as to its true purpose or value, but anytime she handed it to a shugenja after a battle, none could ascertain its use beyond being a simple humble and otherwise uninteresting trinket.
But even in knowing this, she never seemed to part with it as she gazed on it now, only gazing up at the Phoenix who was resting above ground nearby simply reading of the news of the empire. She did not have to read what she had already seen herself though. She did extend a bit of curiosity for the moment.
"Phoenix-san, would you care to join me? I would be honored to have some company on which to share this night, even if only for a little idle chat."
Her voice was oddly gentle for such a battle laden soul, but it would reach Taeshik's ears.

OOC: Yeah, I realize the rumors are about a Morito, I'm suggesting that the rumor is false, but that there's some truth to it. That there is a threat (shapeshifter is a possibility), and it's in the Hida Family, not the Morito Family. Taeshik looks up, slightly startled. His Kami had this way of playing pranks on him, and he should be use to it by now. Whilst lost in thoughts, his Kami had all but dropped him off on the ground next to one of those battle maidens; and to top it off... she'd noticed him. " My apologies, daughter of the plains. I was unaware I had drifted so closely to the ground." he replied honestly. He floated over towards her, keeping his back to the fire, but her within his sight. The flames would make it difficult to see something approaching if his eyes adjusted to them. He looked at the Horse which was resting peacefully with his rider, and a flicker of recognition hit Taeshik's eyes. " You!", he exclaims in a very shocked manner, before quickly composing his face with a grin, " Again, my apologies, you're quite a sight on the battlefield. I think surely everyone knows you by sight, if not by name. I am Taeshik, of the Agasha family. And while it is unlikely you have seen me on the battlefield due to the methods I use, I have seen much of you on the battlefield.", Agasha comments in a mischievous tone that he hopes isn't mistake for flirtation. His method... what kinda line was that? It made him sound like the guy hiding behind everyone when in truth he used the Air Kami to make his and his entourage's presence unseen as he lifts them over the enemy to land well behind enemy lines and wreak havoc from the rear. Of course nobody saw him, if they did, he wouldn't be very good at what he was doing.

((I see now, no worries! XD))
Haruka smiled pleasantly as Taeshik joined him. She fixation on her necklace fading as she allowed it to hang down on her armor.
"I am honored to be known and to fight for my family, my clan, and my nation. But truly you shugenja are a wonder of yourselves. It is your abilities that help drive them away from afar, lend speed to my men's feet, and heal the wounded.
Truly we would be lost without your aid Agasha Taeshik-san. But come tell me, it looks like you have the news there in your hand from the capital. Anything of interest on this evening? Is the shogun ever going to get here?"
She seemed to chuckle in pure jest. But a smile on the battle maiden's face seemed to be a wonderful break. As with all who met her, her unbroken skin somewhat striking as her youth still clung to her. Only the age of 20 but still unblemished even in the thick of war. It couldn't be said if she would retain this undamaged form for much longer in the fighting, but so far she had never been struck by anything more damaging than an arrow. No scar held her form.
The grey mare gently acknowledged the Phoenix by looking up briefly from her grazing, only for now to seemingly accept and quietly resume her feeding.

Taeshik smiled at the question over the Shogun, but didn't say anything. To do so would be perilous, as he would never be one to question someone of that position. Instead he let out a short, sharp whistle, and a moment later, the soft neigh of a horse and the sound of approaching hoofsteps made it obvious that his steed was approaching. " You would like her", Taeshik commented abstractly, " She was wild when I found her, but she's a kindred spirit.[/i]" The black mare entered the clearing, approaching Taeshik, nudging at a pocket of his open shirt in search for the sugar that Taeshik withdrew. A Tsurichi Bow was strapped to the saddle bag along with a quiver full of arrows. Rubbing her ears, Taeshik addresses Haruka, " No, that's not the sort of Shugenja I am. While I do assist in healing and aiding on the walls with the others at times, my duty tends to put me in the heart of battle.", his hardened chest being slightly more visible as he begins to brush his horse for the evening, the build of a warrior, not a scholar. The mare bites the hat, pulling it off his head to reveal a nearly clean shaven head with a thick horse-tail patch of hair coming off his head, just above the neck. A tattoo becomes visible on his back, which while hard to make out due to his shirt, seems to be some sort of bird with wings outspread past his shoulders. " You caught me in contemplation actually, my readings of courtly correspondence has me worrying about the security of the Imperial City with all the greatest warriors being so far away. Too many odd incidences happening all at once which don't seem to add up[/i]", as he talks it seems almost as if he's more talking to himself than to you, " On the dawn of a war, we hear that a Daimyo has influenced these Yobanjin to war, rumors of a shapshifter in one of the clans, and the Shogun slowly marching in a manner that draws every available man who could defend the city, far from it.[/i]", he catches himself suddenly, realizing he's possibly saying more than he should, " Not with such intent, of course! But still... the city seems empty of everything except the Imperial Family and Courtly Attendants.[/i]" He pauses, not really sure how much more he should say. OOC: 11pm here, gonna crash. Will be back on the morrow.

The battle maiden seemed unmoved, untroubled by his words. "I am not at liberty to decide whether we fight because of some sort of conspiracy. If we did not stand against these barbarians, our lands would be lost regardless of who tossed the first stone and why."
Haruka seemed to take a small twig from the pit with a small ember on the end as she looked at it with some consideration.
"But it makes it easier to know that I'm still destroying a very obvious threat, and makes me take pride in every life that I save of Rokugan. To be fair though, I do not blame the shogun's pace..." A smile creeping on her face as she looked down again.
"I've seen his vast armies and assisted them myself, when they do reach this place we will drive the enemy out of this land for good. Hopefully they will never ever dare return to these lands or disturb us again. When the Shogun arrives I will turn my head and smile for it will be the final days of this battle. I will only be disappointed I could not slay more of them on my own, but pride is hardly the thing to be thinking of now."
She gently let a breath out as she blew the tiny ember out, drawing the smallest bit of smoke from the end of the burned piece of twig. She placed her palms together as she would pray gently as she always had, but few would ever really see the spiritual quiet of the Utaku battle maiden as they tended to pray either with one another or in private.
"I do wonder, if you don't mind me prying, Taeshik-san, but you said you met your mare as she was wild. I would like to hear more of this meeting. The night is long and I do enjoy hearing of the bonds between man and horse." Haruka gently sat on the ground as she warmed her still covered feet by the fire's edge, relaxing her elbow on the log she was just sitting on. She propped her head up as she still watched the fire flickering, removing the trinket she had previously examined and placing it out of sight in her armor.

"She...", his words were cut off as both mares started to whinney quietly. The battle maiden moved first, but her actions were lost as his focus changed to an incoming threat, he barely dodged the axe-like object that just flew past his head, his hand waving towards the ground as the remaining embers flew through the air into the direction that the axe had been thrown from.
Without thought, the Tsurichi Bow flew into his hands from the horse, and in a fluid motion an arrow was knotched and released, followed by an immediate thump of it hitting Flesh. "I think they've come for you Maiden, seems you've made some fans out there...", his words cut off as 2 more arrows flew past his head in the direction of the enemy. The twin brothers who watched over Taeshik had joined in the attack, and the sound of twin thumps seemed to suggest 2 more fallen.
So this is why the Kami dropped me here, Taeshik realized, not to flirt with some maiden, but to protect her.
At this point, all hell broke loose into the once quiet camp, and with the speed of a Kakita, Taeshik's Nagamaki unsheathed and sliced through the first of the attackers to reach the camp.
Description (since I've not given that yet): Taeshik wears loose fitting pants, and a shirt that is barely a shirt at all, flowing into the air at the slightest gusts of wind. Though hard to see in the darkness, his pants are a deep marroon color, and his shirt a light blue. Although he carries his Daisho with him, his hand always holds what appears to be a staff, but is in truth a Nagamaki (A Katana looking weapon with a hilt as long as the blade itself, a mix of Naginata and Katana). He stands 5'10", and has very muscular shoulders and arms. He is shaved bald, with the exception of a tail of hair that hangs like a horse's tail from his neck. But this is rarely noticed since he's almost always wearing a cone shaped hat to keep the sun from his face. Across his back is a Tattoo of an Owl, wings outspread and reaching to his elbows.

Equipment description: Haruka is wearing violet colored armor with the silvery iron color for highlights. Her hair is solid black and taken back in a bun, with only a deep purple ribbon for decoration as she is not with a helmet. Otherwise it's just bloodstained battle armor suitable for cavalry.
Haruka had little problem avoiding the arrows as it seemed she was merely smiling as the first one sang past her ears. She was down low at first. "I'd hardly consider them fans, I do not know what love or adoration a Yobanjin could harbor for me right now..."
With some fair proficiency she would dodge the arrows more directed at her, watching the other two Dragons join them. Her dai-kyu had been resting behind her as she snapped it up with a flick of her hands and released three arrows in return in quite the succession. She would prove she needed no protector, but the company was as it was, fated it seemed.
She merely smirked as she watched Taeshik already lunging into battle. Ever at the ready, this is the way of war. His motion allowed her to get clear of the arrows for the moment and get to her battle steed where she'd unhinge her lance from the saddle. Her mount reared as she charged passed Taeshik and his brothers with incredible speed, headlong into the raiding party.
At first she couldn't see how many their were, impaling fighters as she went. Mostly men of course. She was a blurr as she sank into the night, the sound of dying men filling it as other bushi and fighters all rose from their beds to help join in. "There's at least 50 Yobanjin, do not let any of them leave alive!"
The moon pulled out from behind the clouds as she reared up, entrenched in battle but never overwhelmed as the battle maiden's figure was etched out in front of the pale sphere. Battle incarnate, the Crab had the Shadowlands, but this was her full calling, in defense of the empire.
Her lance strikes precise and never wasted, the exotic weapon no less at home in her hands as a katana was for a samurai.

Within minutes, the number of allies far outnumbered the enemy, and again, it became painfully obvious to Taeshik that this wasn't much of a war at all. More of a massacre. As the dust started to settle, Taeshik wiped the blood from his blade and walked over to Haruka.
"We should get to the bottom of this, find out why they are attacking. Who is pushing them to their demise. I haven't seen a battle yet where their losses didn't far outnumber our own, and we're the entrenched ones. What say you that we each take a small handful of our closest allies, and investigate beyond the front line, into the heart of the Yobanjin territories?"

Haruka, still atop her battle mare, looked down to Taeshik as she too cleaned her weapon, but for the moment not her armor. The painted Unicorn mon with the blood of the enemy slashing across it.
"The losses are better for them to take than us any day. We do hold the advantage of home ground, but even so, they don't seem to be assaulting with the true forethought of proper warfare."
She seemed to glance out towards the enemy in the distant darkness. "Their desperation is disheartening at times, but we are taking on a vast army, not just some roving band of unhappy neighbors. But still, they have not proven themselves to me as anything truly noteworthy in battle, besides their relentless ability to throw their lives away against our defenses..."
Her gaze shifted back to the Phoenix. "Your thought is indeed bold and somewhat risky, but I'd be certainly willing to accompany you. Night raids are a bit out of place, even for Yobanjin.
I share your concern and if you wish it I will ride with you Taeshik-san."
She bowed from her place in the saddle, as her strength was his. She only then dismounted to ensure that she got all of the rest of her equipment ready for the mission. If they were caught, if they were separated, they might need a few supplies to get them through as she packed her saddle with a few things and all her weapons as she came over to him again, her horse following gently as she did not have to hold reins to lead it. The mare devoted to her battle maiden.

" We meet here an hour before sunset on the morrow. Bring your closest allies with you, I must seek some scrolls for some research before we go.[/i]", Taeshik said to her, as he already began planning how best to infiltrate the Yobanjin camp. He had collected many scrolls from his Yobanjin research, and would need to check on some of their customs if his plan was to work. As the day wore on, Taeshik first rested in his small abode after a farewell to Haruka, then upon awakening, began reading of the scrolls. At the afternoon tea, he spoke with his closest advisors and allies. Together they sat in a circle, amongst them (The list of NPCs I'm bringing with on this mission): - Isawa Kronus, Isawa Mo-dul, and Agasha Shensei, his 3 Apprentices (Phoenix Inquisitors/Air Masters)
- Agasha Koshen, and Agasha Shiva, the twin brothers from Dragon Mountain (Tao Archers)
- Foenix, the Air Kami that was never more than a breath away (Friendly Kami)
- Shiba Rudahg, his personal protector (Personal Yojimbo).
He requested his personal friend, his trusted 2nd in command (Usagi Yojimbo) to lead Kuni Ty (Kuni Witchunter) and his tribe of fervish followers (8 Berserker Followers) to head to Imperial City with a regiment of Monk Warriors (40), in hopes of stopping any potential threat there whilst the Samurai were all away. The other Samurai, from all over the Realm, were requested to stay at the wall and protect it whilst Taeshik headed out on this expedition. His Trainers (4 Loyal Budokas) would continue training the recruits and trying to raise the army. As the Sun began to set, Taeshik made his way back to the clearing of the battle from the night before to meet with the Bttle Maiden, and lay out his plan to her. With the use of the Air Kami, he would change their appearances to appear as Yobanjin, and ride into their camps. His studies (Lore: 112) should allow him to change her appearance into that of a high ranking officer, his into one of their Priests or Shamans, and the rest into a more elite looking group of Yobajin. " Just remember not to talk to them, I can change how you look, but not how you sound. As a leader I imagine you know how to scowl or smile in a manner that conveys a message... just uhm, also don't forget that you will look like a Male, since a Female leader in the Yobajin territories is seemingly unheard of, and probably explains why they fail so easily..."

Arriving with some conveniently acquired Yobanjin commanding cavalry gear already affixed to her horse, Haruka looked over the plans fairly thoroughly, smiling as he spoke.
"There's no need to pander to my humor Taeshik-san, but you may indeed be right."
Clearly bemused, she nodded. "Alright then, I trust you to be my words then. I can growl just as good as any of these Yobanjin, if we can make this illusion work we could provide excellent information, but we'll also have to ensure that we are not seen by either friend or foe when we commence this illusion. Our allies will fire on us if they see us, as I would not expect otherwise."
She rolled her shoulders a little as she held out a single arrow, a blunt and otherwise useless arrow but affixed to the end was a small flare. "We'll use this when we return, my infantry and cavalry groups will be ready to assist us if need be. It's blue flash will be more than clear enough for them to know it is us."
She merely nodded as her gaze fell on them briefly before turning to Taeshik again. "Shall we then?" She stowed the arrow in her quiver.
Her few allies came to her side that she'd personally requested: A heavy cavalryman by the name of Shinjo Kaze And two berserkers, brothers, Hida Junsho and Hida Kyozu She came hoping that muscle would be enough from her end, she'd hoped he would bring the magical aspect for now.
((Literally, 172 med infantry... WHO NEEDS THAT MUCH INFANTRY... and 145 light cavalry too.. @.@))

(I'm sitting on 45 Heavy Infantry, 95 Medium Infantry, 96 Light Infantry, 1 Heavy Cavalry, 186 Light Cavalry, 20 Elite Archers, 82 Archers, 48 Scouts, 40 Monk Warriors, and a ton of 'other', including every single Ally out there for doing all the Courtier/Shugenja/Bushi trainings. ) Together with his 3 Apprentice, Taeshik summoned forth a powerful Air Kami to 'play a trick' on the Yobanjin. With only the 3 of them on horses, Shinjo Kaze, and the 2 Samurai, they made their way, unseen to the valley below, a veil of invisibility surrounding them all. As they emerged past a crop of trees, the spell completed, giving them the appearance of Yobanjin Warriors. Haruka appeared as a Tribal Leader, Taeshik as a Tribal Shaman, and Shinjo Kaze as a Tribal commander. The rest of the entourage took on the looks of simple Tribal Warriors, made more realistic by them changing clothes into something slightly more barbaric, stripped from the previous night's corpses. As they rode, Taeshik finally had time to answer her questions, " I was training with the Battle Maidens when I met her, actually. Camping, I took some time apart to gather my wits after having to ride with those women, and was sitting out on the plain when I noticed her. I needed to release some tension, so I asked a Kami to grant me the speed to race her, and we chased each other around til morning. We've been best friends every since.[/i]", he said, patting her on her neck a bit. They rode throughout the day, past several scouting parties and small raiding parties before approaching what appeared to be some sort of city, surrounded by a tall wall, and smelling of human waste. Up ahead could be seen a guard post with several guards checking the goods that were being brought past the walls.

Haruka used her appearance alone to scowl down silently at them. She knew just from looking at them and their trembling hands that the illusion had taken a good and full hold on her appearance. These guards did not wish to impede a tribal leader returning from the battle for very long.
They saw nothing out of place and otherwise backed down, allowing the small band inside. The fort as it were, was hastily built out of large wooden planks, the only thing that would stop it from burning now was the fact that the wood was quite wet from the northern reaches where it had been cut down and hauled from. It wasn't terribly impressive but simply effective enough, with patchy guard systems to boot.
The yobanjin seemed to nurse their own wounds if they got wounded, they bore little love for each other it seemed. The few who had acquired samurai belongings seemed to keep them like trophies, occasionally dawning them for horseplay. This display angered Shinjo Kaze but with a quiet grunt Haruka brought him into line as he would have to resist. They were a bit more primal and foolish as a culture. They looked Rokugani in appearance alone, but their behavior was grotesque at best.
The mud was fairly thick below their feet and the horse's hooves, but they seemed to manage with little hindrance. Haruka's gaze immediately honed in on a few armored officers speaking in a rough tongue as she started to approach leading them all over, but she looked down to Kaze and Taeshik to go speak to them, and they would have to obey.
The four officers looked up with growls, it had not been a good day for them. "And who are these!? I swear we get sent more as we lose them." They seemingly ignored Taeshik and Kaze for the moment as the two Hida brothers stood like Haruka's bodyguards, she would be seen as too good to talk to the officers for now as she allowed them to do all the talking.
Layed out on a scarcely maintained piece of paper that was half stained in blood and mud, the two could make out their map that was their perspective on Mountain Watch Keep, a few places rather obviously marked with skulls for where the defense had shown no yield.

"Graugh blaug friggle daggle", Taeshik had no idea what the noises coming from these officer's mouths was suppose to mean, and didn't care. The plans though, that was worth caring about. Taeshik took a scroll from his satchel, and murmured a tiny prayer to an Air Kami near the table. The canvas cover, and everything on the table suddenly flew into the air as a huge gust of wind pushed through the area, amidst the confusion, the parchment seem to just disappear off into the wind. As the officers chased down the debris and parchments, the party marched onwards, coming to a stop at the outer wall.
Taeshik pulled out a scroll, the one that had gone missing from the table. "Good info, but it doesn't tell us why they're pushing this losing war. We need something to indicates why there's a war to begin with. In Yobanjin Mura, some of the Peasants said that it was one of our own that pushed for the war. We need to find out if there's truth in that, and if so, who it was."
The commotion at the tent was dying down, but it sounded like they were possibly searching for someone or something. "We might have to fight our way out of here, how many you think there are here? I think I replaced this scroll with a scroll that might give away that a non Yobajin is in the area... Didn't have time to plan it out too well..."

Frankly the Yobanjin were agitated, but were hardly suspicious of the group for now, seemingly just trying to recover all their things. Haruka, in part because she was unable to speak simply moved with her two body guards away.
The speech however would be what caught the Yobanjin's ears, as the lot of them looked at Taeshik in a fury, as they readied their weapons, drawing them as they charged without hesitation. "ROKUGANI!!"
If now there were ever a time great air kami, give me the voice of a man, lend me their sturdy tone so that I might show these barbarians the error of their ways when they would not bow to you!
The battle mare reared up as a lance impaled firmly between the other officers and Taeshik. "ENOUGH!" She actually spoke in the Yobanjin tongue, drawing a bit of a wide eyed look from her three allies she'd brought. The tone of voice was also a bit surprising. "This man is my prisoner, he will not be harmed yet! I have come to find where the great commander is, where is he?"
Her fury and commanding power seemed to make even the officers flinch, her voice had overpowered their senses a bit, but had made combat less of a need out here where it meant nothing. She had taken the action to try and get them to point the way to her, clever to avoid the skirmish. Her gaze unrelenting as Kaze gently took Taeshik roughly, but certainly not a way that harmed or compromised him in any way. She was selling her bluff, it was far too deep in enemy territory to blow cover now, if word spread there would be a possibility the true instigator of this warfare would leave.
Her battle mare pawed impatiently for an answer, showing her ready to depart the moment they betrayed an answer.
