After the initail observation of the room, Kenpachi wrote a great deal of notes. There was obviously several attackers, he had a servant bring in reports from the eta that carried the bodies out. The weapons used were varied, which was unusual.
Kenpachi took a moment to walk out of the room. It was growing uncomfortable. He spied a storage closet that was slightly ajar. He opened it and was surpried. He walked into the room and looked around. "I belive I may have found something." he said quietly. It was a scrap of clothing, perhaps the sleeve of a kimono, half burnt and bloodied. The amount of blood spoke to a dire wound. Kenpachi looked at the cloth. It was almost nothing on it's own, but certainly belonged to one of the attackers.

Something just didn't sit well with me over this. For an act of this cailber the evidence was just sloppy. I still thought this was an ambush either physical or political, but of course the only way to expose such things would be to spring the trap. I saw Kenpachi walk out and go to storage closet. I heard what he said and I found myself moving to his side. The closet smelled of dried blood and was a mess. "Kenpachi-san correct me if im wrong but isn't that pattern of cloth the type favored by the Lion Clan?"

Kenpachi took a good look at the hems of the kimono. "Hai, Sanjuro-sama. The color is...wrong though. Kenpachi pointed to his cuffs to indicate. "Lion samurai often wear exacting colors to indicate their school. Certain shades for certain styles. This color has not been used in some time. This particular mix of gold and yellow was used some time in the past 50 years. My sensei spoke of a style of swordmanship. The entire school, what little there was, was based off of meshing the Hida school with the Matsu school. They were lost in the shadowlands three years after the school's founding." Kenpachi chewed his lip. What in the name of the kami did this mean?
Hirotomo came around the corner. "Gek is almost ready for the interogation, Father." He said averting his eyes from his brother's room. Kenpachi nodded. Something was not sitting right.

hmmm a Hida Matsu mix school I thought to myself that would be merging two of the most ruthless schools of Bushi I could even think of, and lost in the Shadowlands. "Kenpachi-san I am concerned then that if members of this school are here now then we should notify first the jade magistrates. We do not completely know what a bunch of possible tainted bushi could have been doing here in our lands. Second we should open our jade storage and hand a piece of jade to our men in case these men are still around." I of course had no intention of letting a gang of tainted brigands running a muck in my clans lands, however the Empire as a whole was very touchy when it came to taint. The Jade Magistrates would bring down enough complaints if we didn't notify them that would be even more of an issue to our clan, urrrrg politics.

Kitsuki Rinko had been very appreciative that Kenpachi had pointed out the stolen items to Sanjuro. It had been his only error, due to lack of information, and she did not want to show up a Clan Champion. Even a minor Clan one. She had carefully searched around, going slower than Sanjuro and reminding herself of Mitsouko's statements. She was thankful that the others around her had such useful insight. She stayed in the area as Kenpachi left, inspecting the place he had taken the clothing scrap from.
She'd observed a few things of note so far that contributed to the evidence and information accumulated so far. Most importantly, very little had been taken. Certainly nothing of great value - nobody had spoken of the attackers demanding valuables or looking for storage area for such things. Relatively little had left the building in fact, bar the few items snatched by the ronin including a kimono. It was mostly sentimental in value. Another interesting detail was in relation to the sohei. Were they related or a ruse? It was difficult to say.
Looking under one of the unusually raised beds, Rinko came across a broken chair. She dragged it out and noted that the chair had been kicked underneath and must have become damaged in the attack. Certainly the attackers seemed mostly ill disciplined if reasonably capable fighters. She had another look under the bed, waving her hands around to feel for anything unusual. Her right hand touched something cold. She gave it a quick tap and confirmed it was metal. She carefully put her hand over it and unceremoniously backed out of the tight space with the item. In the light she could better inspect it. It was a star and crescent medallion. The same type often used by sohei sects in fact. She'd studied many types of lore in her time and the symbol on the medallion was reasonably recogniseable. It was primarily for a militaristic sohei sect that had strongholds in stronghold in Lion, Crane and Crab lands. What regions? She took a few moments to recall further and remember the biggest stronghold nearby was in Matsu lands although there were more in the Daidoji regions and the land belonging to the Hida.
Did this prove the sohei were related or was it planted though? She gave it more thought as she inspected it, looking for indentations or signs of use or wear and tear. She also smelt it and then gave it a quick lick to see if she could smell or taste any substances or flavours that would give her a clue. She tucked the medallion in her kimono as she continued to look around.
There were a number of damage marks on the walls and floor from the attackers' weapons. Places where they'd either over extended themselves, been clumsy or tried to purposefully damage furniture or walls. Weirdly though, all the marks in the room that Kenpachi's wife and son had been killed in seemed to be made by the same weapon. They weren't dent marks from a club, as she'd seen on the odd item of furniture in the other rooms, nor were they strong cuts that had nicked the wooden beams and cut clean through the shoji screens in the corridor. No, they were small and even a little ragged. The cuts were jarring. Whatever had made them, likely a katana or possibly a scimitar, had not been very sharp. She inspected the ground and the height of the cuts in the wall and where they'd hit the floor. It was an effort to see how tall the attacker was and how he had been using his weapon.
He seemed to be shifting his stance. It was a katana he had used though. Also, there was a notable point when his movements had become more erratic and he'd struck the ground more strongly. He'd been fighting someone. Perhaps he had been injured. Rinko recalled that Kenpachi's wife had been found with a katana through her. Maybe she'd fought the man and wounded him and then purposefully provoked him? She recalled how the katana had been so deeply imbedded that the attacker didn't have time to take back the weapon as they'd had to flee before Toku reinforcements came back.
She was starting to better picture it all now. One thing above all others was clear though. The mixed weapons of the attackers and the ronin that had been engaged. The lack of stolen items. Kenpachi's history. The findings of the others. It all suggested that the attack had been made to kill Kenpachi himself. She suspected that whoever had commanded the attack or lead it had thought that Kenpachi would be home. It explained the overwhelming numbers too. They had expected more resistence. It must have been an assassination attempt on Kenpachi.
The interrogation would reveal more though. She frowned as she kept searching for further clues and information. The rooms involved hadn't been touched since the incident but the passage of time still hid more information that she would have liked. What she had now was enough for pushing forward theories but it wasn't anything concrete yet.
She sat down and crossed her legs to become comfortable. She began to meditate on what she'd learnt so far, trying to piece things together and see if there was anything she missed. There was a dull urge in the back of her mind to punish those responsible but she managed to push it aside and focus while she calmed herself.

Kenpachi looked around the room. There was information gathered, enough to have more questions at any rate. "Perhaps we should question the ronin, then Akodo-san. I hope they offer more answers then questions." Kenpachi looked over at Rinko-san. He hoped she was making better sense of this than he was. He knew investigating a crime involving himself would be hard, he shook his head. He was wrong when he thought that, this task was impossible by himself.

There was much going on behind the scenes here. I couldn't help but wonder why the Monkey could instigate such burning hatred from others. Our job after all was to help everyone in Rokugan. There was only so much we could gain from investigating the scene, we needed information. The next step was the prisoner. I didn't like keeping this man the way we had but at first he was some what forthcoming. I had a plan to combat his fear of his employers with the compassion of life by confronting him with the man he had helped wrong.
I nodded at Kenpachi, a knowing gesture like we were both on the same page. Now to the prisoner.
