10k10 does indeed seem to be the maximum rings can give you, from first hand experience. In EE at least. Ojii knows what he doth say.
Still... it could show 10k10 as the max and simply be rolling more than 10 in the background, taking the best 10 dice as the roll. I know what it says, but not the programming behind it.

Considering the last time I rolled (with my Water Ring of 13) I got four 2's, I doubt it is rolling 13 and keeping 10... unless my dice were just that bad. I agree it would be a nice modification if we could roll Ring keep 10.

No, it caps at 10k10. It hearkens back to the old AEG Rule of Ten in the tabletop game, IIRC. Basically, you never roll more than ten dice. The 7th Sea version gave you a flat +10 bonus to the roll for every kept die afterward, but I don't remember if the L5R version was as kind.

Yes it is. It's +5 for every dice exceeding 10k10 limit. But it's only after you hit 10k10, before that it's like this 12k5 = 10k6, two unkept dice become one kept.

Two for one? Ouch. Understandable, though. The heroism vibe from 7th Sea was a totally different flavor than that of L5R, more over-the-top.

The variability in the table-top roll and keep method always drives me crazy. I love everything else, but I always feel like that one aspect puts too much on luck, and not enough on character ability.
When I run a 4th Ed, I'm going to house rule around that one.

Still nebulous.
I want to keep:
* Ring structure * Stat and skill * Raises
My rough ideas: * Rip off cyberpunk (Skill+Stat+1d10; adjust TN's accordingly) * Or, Use Stat as a bonus, roll skill d10. keep one.
Clearly, it's not ready yet. Would be better formed, except the gaming group wanted me to run Vampire Dark Ages, so I relented.

This is all true and ok, but has i said this is not L5R. There can still be some ajustement to the roll; the exemple of the 3ed and 4ed could be used or just give the best out of for exemple 16K10 would be nice. Or give a bonus for every dice over 10. This is up to Jay!
