Haruka:
Well now, there's a lot of hostile talking and movements as of late with the civil war on the horizon. But who are your greatest allies, and your biggest enemies in Emerald Empire?
Setsuro:
Well, to start with, I don't think anyone is -my- enemy. As far as I'm aware, no one's made any advance against my clan, either. As for my allies, well, that's become clear here, hasn't it? On a personal level, each of my clansmen and I are on great terms. Then you've got people like Haruka, Kasumi, Senshi and Tomatsu.
Haruka:
You don't consider members of the 'Spider Clan' as enemies?
Setsuro:
Pshaw. Spider Clan? What nonsense is this?
Haruka:
Haha, well either way, wouldn't you consider the Shadowlands to be your enemy at the very least? I mean you are 'the' crab.
Setsuro:
That's a given. Has anyone ever asked you if you had to breathe? Didn't think so.
Haruka:
Well naturally, sama. Moving on though..
How does it feel to know the 'spider emissary' was committing seppuku on your birthday?
Setsuro:
That was a pretty amusing twist of fate. Part of me wondered if one side would accept them while the other didn't. Turns out they got axed by everybody.
Haruka:
I'd ask if that's what you'd hope for, but I wouldn't want a tetsubo dropped on my foot... accidentally :3
What political power do you wield in your clan?
Setsuro:
Political Power? That's an odd question to ask a Crab. Generally speaking, my brothers trust me and I them. I'm not sure if it's power to not have to give commands or not.
Haruka:
Obviously your brothers put their faith in you, but when it comes to other clans, do you try and put yourself at the forefront of inter-clan matters?
And is this a burden on your duty to the wall, or do you feel it is necessary to your clan?
Setsuro:
I've had talks with plenty of the other clans, but generally I get pushed up and talk to their champions directly. I've spoken to every one of them on a one-on-one basis, except the Mantis. They've been kind of flighty.. I'm not a cheerleader though, I can walk and chew bubblegum at the same time.
Haruka:
How is the decision process done in the crab clan?
Setsuro:
I speak with my advisers, figure out what's best for the clan and then we do it. Pretty simple process.
Haruka:
Naturally the tone of these questions is because of the recent turmoil in the Empire. So there are many who are curious of the motivations of the Crab in the upcoming conflict.
Why support Toturi?
Setsuro:
Toturi the Third is someone I believe to be the true Emperor. There are plenty of reasons for this. His support of the Crab Clan, his understanding of the nature of the threat beyond our walls, the support that he has offered the empire. These are all important things. The assassination attempts on his life have only failed, causing more trouble than they've been worth. Then you've got the legend of the Ki-Rin to attend with, so who I am to defy it? I suspect everyone to do what they believe is the honorable thing to do. That's what I intend to do.
Haruka:
I'm certain there are those who might not be so well aware, but what is the legend of the Ki-Rin?
Setsuro:
Legends say that the Ki-Rin only appears during the time of a true and prosperous Emperor. It had plenty of time to show up before the declaration of Toturi III. It only chose to appear after.
Haruka:
All right, why not Hantei?
Setsuro:
That's a valid question. Some say he's the true Emperor. Let them put their support behind him, but I beg them do it for the right reasons. In my eyes, Hantei has failed to do his duty as an Emperor. His job is to protect the people of this Empire, but he failed and so Toturi III needed to do it. Hantei, the original Hantei, gave my clan the job of protecting the Empire. It was our solemn duty. A man who fails to do this will get no respect from us.
Haruka:
Did he not direct Kaneka to assemble forces to meet the Yobanjin conflict and end it once and for all?
Setsuro:
No, he didn't, not until Toturi III had already marched. It took weeks for him to come out of whatever absence he had to deem what Toturi III did was right.
But in the end, the duty he put on his brother was that. The Shogun was charged with the defense of the Empire. The Shogun was doing his job as directed by his Emperor.
Haruka:
So in short you approve the Shogun's ascendancy because he did his duty. And you turn away from the Emperor who tasked him with this duty? How has Hantei not committed himself to the Empire in this regard? Should an Emperor be marching to war along with his people?
Setsuro:
First, yes. I approve of the Shogun's ascendancy. He would put his life on the line to protect this Empire and he would defend it. Second, I turned away from Hantei because he failed in the duty tasked to him by the Heavens. It should not have taken him weeks to declare the defense of the Empire to be just. If not for Toturi III and his gathered forces, there could have been serious damage done to the Empire.
It was when the Emperor hesitated. He paused. Any warrior can tell you that if you hesitate when lives are on the line, it will cost you. Blood, lives, possibly the future. An Emperor who fails his duty and an Emperor who hesitates is not an Emperor I want to live under.
Haruka:
Well as I'm sure you've heard, there's been turmoil in other clans with their Champions having to go a different path from what their clan desires. What would you do had the Crab decided to side with Hantei?
Setsuro:
I suppose I hadn't thought of that. If that were the case, then I guess I would be swearing loyalty to Toturi III and become a ronin until such a day as when Toturi III sits upon the throne.
Haruka:
Well thankfully it did not have to come to such extreme tests of loyalty..
But on a more personal perspective, what is the one thing you'd wish for, Setsuro-sama?
Setsuro:
I could tell you that I wish for the Crab to eternally stand vigilant upon the wall, but we will, so that is no wish. The only wish I have is far from any that one might suspect of the Crab. I wish that this Empire, our land, our home, that which we have fought and died for, to remain free and safe. This civil war does not please me, so I hope that it will end as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Haruka:
As do most honorable souls I believe.
But if you were Toturi III, what would you have done or what would you do differently?
Setsuro:
I..have no such aspirations. I believe Toturi's path the right one.
Haruka:
Whats your take on the situation with the black scrolls and the shadowlands threat?
Setsuro:
Regardless of what threats appear, the Crab will be there to answer them.
Haruka:
A question from one of our dear minor clansmen came through. He asks:
I'm not sure how old Setsuro is, but which of the Four Winds did (or would have) Setsuro support? Does it have any bearing on him supporting Toturi III?
Setsuro:
Setsuro is currently 25 years of age. Ironically the same age as myself, but not intended, I assure you. Setsuro supported Kaneka, just like his father before him.
Haruka:
He also goes on to ask..
Due to the instability of the Empire at the moment, do you think the other son of Toturi will throw himself as a candidate for emperor, making it a three winds battle?
Setsuro:
Isawa Sezaru..a man who also has had attempts on his life. I suppose that will depend upon what conclusions he draws. If he would like the opinion of one who defends the Empire on a daily basis, I'd be happy to converse with him about it.
Haruka:
I think many would love to query the sons of Toturi to find out just what is running through their minds. But it is not truly our place to ask sadly.
But bringing it back to a group we certainly know and revere and can turn to.. How does Setsuro view the other Champions at the moment?
Setsuro:
The other Champions..well, he has a great respect for all of them, actually. He's had a decent amount of interaction with each one, though one or two have not yet achieved that, due to wrong place wrong time. The most disheartening was the Dragon Champion and his stepping down. I suppose it is very like the Dragon to leave a Crab confused.
Haruka:
As is the dragon's way naturally..
And one final question since I've picked your brain enough on politics and recent events..
Do Crabs really do it sideways?
Setsuro: And standing up.
Haruka:
...Indeed. Well thank you most certainly for your answers Setsuro-sama, I'm certain there will be many interested hearts to receive your words.
Setsuro:
Always happy to answer questions, little Haru-chan.
