Isawa Goro shook his head sadly. "I find it ridiculous that some believe the Scorpion should be chastised. Quite apart from the fact that it was a Scorpion who saved the Emperor's envoy, do we really want to abandon our attempts to get the Scorpion to assist the Emperor? If the Imperial forces attack the Scorpion they will simply join Toturi's camp, handing an easy victory to the rebels"

Kakita Hiroshi, resting after a day on the fortifications, rose to say: “I agree, Isawa Goro-san. Whatever might be believed my Clan thinks about the Scorpion... if they were behind this attempt, it would have been a successful one, not one foiled by one of their own.”

A younger samurai enters the room, wearing a black kimono edged with blue on the borders and bearing a Crane insignia on the back. His long black hair is braided and has a streak of white running through it, and his mismatched eyes - one blue, one green - scan the room quickly before he speaks. At his side is a paired set of katana and wakizashi with no tsuba on either blade. The saya of the wakizashi is fused to the left side of the katana's saya, and the shorter blade's tsuka rests just below the katana's tsuka. The emblem of a Crane magistrate hangs from his neck, and his hands are heavily scarred. He gives a quick bow to those in the room and begins to speak.
Perhaps the Scorpion should be given the opportunity to speak on this matter themselves. This entire situation is convoluted - I can see reasons for both arguments. While I find it hard to believe that a serious assassination attempt from the Scorpion clan would be so easily thwarted, and by their own no less, the Scorpion clan's reluctance to declare who they support in this conflict makes me uneasy. I would not put it past them to have faked an assassination attempt simply to "thwart" it and ingratiate themselves to the Hantei supporters, in order to continue playing both sides as they have been.
On the other hand, if you have a failed assassination attempt on your hands, who better to frame for it than a Scorpion clan who's true alliegances are unknown? What better way to drive them into Toturi's camp than to turn the Hantei camp against them by pointing the finger in their direction? We need to hear from the Scorpion themselves who they support. And for their sake, we should hear this soon.

During the last days, Doji Naetaru had been seen in the Imperial City of Toshi Ranbo. He has taken part in many a discussion of political nature in the Imperial City and today, he was talking on the matter with Isawa Goro, Kakita Hiroshi and Kakita Sojiro.
"Samas, we can only but let the Scorpion speak for this matter themselves. The Clan of Secrets had been tasked by Bayushi-kami himself to guard the Empire from threats unseen and they have performed this part with duty and honor. Now if Kaneka was an unseen threat as well, they would have possibly been spurred to honor the Empire again...have you listened of the name of Shosuro Aroru? He was the one to save the ambassador Asako Izuko."

"Unfortunately, his name is unknown to me. I currently have... discreet... inquiries being made into this individual, but so far no information has turned up."

"I would say that even if the Scorpion do admit fault, it would be both wisdom and honour to avoid harsh punishment - or at least to avoid military punishment. The fact is, if the Scorpion did plan this attack as an official act of policy rather than of some rogue faction or pawn of an outside force, then they are on the other side, and beyond reach of any punishment short of victory"
"Frankly I feel it likely that this was the action of a renegade faction. The Master of Secrets claims his Clan is united behind him but I think this is just boasting to hide his shame. Of course he would be insulted to hear it but this is the only explanation that fits the facts. Right now the Scorpion are not a Clan, simply a collection of Samurai who wear the same mon and have the same family name"

Kakita Hiroshi pondered at the words being said a while, and rose to speak.
“If it was not both the assassin and the savior coming from the Scorpion clan, this issue would be much easier, that is an obvious thing to say. One of the samurai must have acted against the orders of his Champion... or both of them... But, a thought just came to me...” Kakita Hiroshi paused, looking around on all those present. “What if both samurai were following direct orders? It is, after all, the Scorpion clan we are discussing here. Masters of the shadows, masters of subterfuge, masters of hidden truth. What if this is a yet another attempt to postpone their declaration on either side of the conflict... It would be best if the Scorpion Champion came and spoke his truth, to end all this uncertainty. Because if he does not come, he will accept the shadow of accusation that he might be responsible.”
Kakita Hiroshi bowed and returned to his place.

"That is giving the Scorpion Champion rather a lot of credit, Hiroshi-san. I have seen little to support the idea that the Scorpion are so unified"
