Week 1 - Gempukku at Nanashi Mura
A truly neutral and reasonably safe location within the Empire does not exist. Each has various forces acting upon it. Courtiers and their influence can make certain seemingly benign places dangerous for some. Many other lands, between Clan borders or on the edge, are hardly safe. Even those great places of pilgrimage usually have some controlling forceEand more importantly they do not like to be disturbed unnecessarily anyway. That applies even for one of the most vivid and important occasions in a samurais life. Some would say the true start of a samurais life. When one takes their name - their gempukku.
Exchange programmes between the schools continue to flourish. It is not unheard of for Unicorn to train in the privileged Kakita Training Schools or for Crab shugenja to trek all the way to Phoenix lands for tuition. It was more uncommon, but not unheard of, for samurai of different families and schools to allow for their gempukku to be hosted somewhere. The host would present each graduating samurai with a gift, pay expenses and allow for tests and a chance for different samurai to come together to learn more about one another and for their sensei and family to hold a court on the side. Those attending were therefore blessed. And the host? They gained much glory and honour for organising such an important event and it gave them a chance to learn a bit about new up and coming faces as well as to have an advantage over the courtly arrangements that were sure to be arranged. It also provided an excellent opportunity for the hosts own students to shine and for the host to receive favours from the other clans.
However, much more rarely would multiple families and Clans meet together to discuss the possibility of a group organisation of such a event. Sometimes a handful of parties would organise different aspects butEyou could count on one hand the number of times a sizeable number of schools elected to hold their gempukku at the same location. It was rarely feasible as the number of students who could be invited would make things chaotic. More normally, only a select few from each school would be sent. Naturally, they were carefully chosen.
This upcoming gempukku though? It was unique. All of the Clans and even some of the Minor Clans had individuals who had been working for a decade to attempt an idea Ea shared gempukku ceremony and celebration in neutral lands that would benefit all. It took years of wrangling Emany wanted to host the event, some had to be persuaded that the occasion would be useful to them, many more were at first disinclined from attending when they knew their enemies would be present. Some ground rules were slowly agreed by difficult consensus. When this took place, no matter the situation between the Clans, they would send at least a handful of their students to attend. The host location would have to be somewhere safe, where all could attend freely and somewhere not unduly influenced by any one clan. The original site suggestion was, thanks to the Crane, the Capital.
On the year that this prototype gempukku was to take place though Ewar broke out between the Clans over who was the rightful Emperor. That is a story for another time. Suffice it to say that a new location had to be hastily chosen less all that had been planned go to waste.
Avoiding those regions now at war, a relatively new and fairly small but important village in the north was chosen. Nanashi Mura. The ronin city under de jure rule of the Dragon but effectively autonomous. The hosts were eager to increase the fame and glory of their city and with the decrease of attendees due to the constraints of war, they would actually be able to pay for the event. Things started to pick up pace by summer and then it was only weeks away.
About Nanashi Mura
It is a ronin village that has only been in existence for some decades. It has a single castle but is only allowed limited defences by the Dragon who watch over the city. It houses thousands of ronin, primarily from the Lion, Phoenix, Crane and Crab clans. However, it is only allowed a modest guard. It has relatively good law and order though, good agriculture and most importantly it allows access to anyone as long as they cause no trouble.
Your character Ewhether there to merely watch events, guard an attendee or have their officialEgempukku ceremony Eis a valued guest and will be treated very well by the villages leader Eone MusoriE an older samurai who behaves more like a courtier than a bushi but wears his daisho proudly.
The castle has five floors and room has been set aside on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors for the guests. The higher the level, the more important the guest. Amazingly there are individual rooms for each attending samurai, though some are a little Spartan. The village is evidently not the richest in the Empire but the Dragon have assisted the ronin in furbishing the important parts of the castle with elegant finery and there is an excited atmosphere in the village Eit is holding a festival in celebration of the event and to give thanks for the opportunity to all of the great and minor clans.

Okay... so why am I here?
I will inform each of you of certain things that may be expected of you to do/not do. Otherwise you are welcome to do as you like. Of course, each of you have been sent for different reasons. The gempukku ceremony is to take place at the end of one week. That week is to be spent demonstrating skills, performing tests and enjoying the celebrations around town. There is then the possibility of remaining for another week to learn from the ronin there, though not all the Clans have given this much consideration, before each new graduate and those attending with them will likely be called back to where they came from.
