Shosuro Yoichi steped into the Hidden Lotus, a tea house famous even in Kyuden Bayushi for its slight infamy. It was not seedy, but its reputation for the unseemly seemed to call to Yoichi-san. Actors, artisans and their overindulged patrons called it home, and all honorable pleasures and indulgences were to be found there. With the right word, and the right gesture of a fan, the others might be found in a back room as well.
No decent samurai would be found here. All for the best. Too colorful to enter, too well thought of to be raided by magistrates. Yoichi nodded to Masoa, the proprietor, who indicated to Yoichi that his guest was waiting in the go room.
Yoichi went down the hall, and slid open the panel to the private room. A man, appearing for all intents and purposes as a Doji courrier, sat before a Go board. Yoichi sat opposite to the mystery Doji.
They began to play, and Yoichi was the first to speak. "Your necklace is three years out of style, and your hair is showing a bit of its natural color. Your hands are too rough from your last assignment. Next time, be a Daidoji." The other man laughed as he placed his first go piece. The go pieces went back and forth quickly as they spoke.
"Good! Well done, Yoichi! Well spotted. The student transcends the master."
"Hardly, Master. You're testing me, as always."
"Indeed, how fares Bayushi-sama?"
"Extremely well. I expect a full recovery." The go stone landed in the section of the go board that marked Yoichi's statement mostly as a lie.
"That is good to hear." A lie on the Master's part, Yoichi saw. "I do so wish our champion to recover." Truth.
"As do I. We need a unified front now." Truth. "Though I do not think the Spider clan is much of a threat. The Crab are weakened now, and easily taken." Two lies did Yoichi tell there. "Oh, and I have been to the lands of the Otomo..."
Thus did the two men spend the hours, trading news and gossip, truth and lies while waiting for the news of Bayushi-sama's recovery, or the summons of Soshi-sama.
