Yoee was angered. This wasn't part of his plan. This wasn't supposed to happen. And yet, the half-torn ricepaper sheet in his hands was enough to infuriate him. How did they do? He was extremly precautious, he didn't let anything slip, he was more careful than a Scorpion trying to hide a dirty secret.
And yet, they had finally discovered the truth. Out of pure luck, they had managed to trick him into revealing his true nature. His true allegiance.
What would he do? What could he do? No matter what he decided, he should do it quickly. A false seppuku and then a timely return from the grave? No, they would probably hire some Kuni withe hunters or Phoenix inquisitors to ensure that this would not happen. Flee? But where could he flee? What would be the safer place in Rokugan for someone like him?
What about somewhere outside Rokugan? The Burning Sands? No, he knew nobody there and would simply become a beggar so far from his true lord...
No, there had to be a solution. What if he shaved his beard and hair and impersonated a monk, hiding in one of the various orders spread across the Empire... maybe the order of Osano-Wo, or the order of Shinsei...
Or... he could become a ronin. At least, that would spare his precious hair and beard. Join one of the ronin bands that roamed across the Empire, maybe the Forest Killers... or these Spiders... after a while he could easily become the undisputed leader of one of those groups.
"This sounds nice," Yoee muttered, his gaze lost in the night sky, a fierce grin appearing on his face.
Somebody was knocking at the door. Actually, that noise sounded more like a battering ram than the usual gentle rap on a Rokugani door. And soon, there would be no door to knock on.
Yoee turned swiftly to face that dying door, looked across the room, grasped his trusted blade and quietly walked to the window. There he stood, waiting for what would likely be his final fight.
When the door finally hit the floor, a bunch of Unicorn samurai rushed in the room, their blades unsheathed.
"Khan-sama, we have orders. You are to be placed under arrest under the custody of the Jade magistrates. Please, follow us," their leader said reluctantly, as if he remembered serving under Yoee's command and didn't like arresting the man who had been his commander for so long.
"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain," he said, grinning. "Looks like I've outlived the time when I was the hero, uh?"
Suddenly, the man who used to be Moto Yoee, the creature who had sold his soul to the One-whose-name-shall-not-be-spoken, disappeared, as if he had been swallowed by the shadows.
The guards looked for him all night long, but the man who had been the Khan of the Unicorn clan was nowhere to be found.
Or was he?
