Sojiro separated from Mai long enough to unsheath his wakizashi. Made from the same aobushi steel as his katana, the blue-hued blade had large steel crystals on the surface. Under normal circumstances it shone like a starlit sky at twilight, but here, surrounded by a field of snow, the wakizashi gleamed even more brilliantly than usual.
"This is Tengo-Raimei, or Heaven's Thunder. Often times normal weapons won't injure the undead, but this will. If you need to use it, don't hesitate."
He pressed the blessed weapon into her hand.
"You have no idea how much I want to come with you Mai, but I can't leave here right now. So please, take it with you. I wish I could do more."
"I..... I love you."
He pulled her close again, kissing her deeply.
"Now go. Just promise me you'll come back."

Mai did not have the strength to refuse the gift. Sojiro's face already revealed the depths of his sincerity in giving it, and her mind was swimming too much to make the polite show. She tied it onto the empty place at her waist reverently, allowing the symbol of his honor to grant her some measure of protection against what she was getting ready to face.
She allowed herself to be taken into his embrace, hearing the words that his actions had already spoken clearly, but touched by them all the same. "Sojiro, I swear this on my mothers soul: we will not be apart for long. I will come back to you, my Sojiro, my...my love."
They made their way to the castle, where heimin were already waiting with Mai's armor and provisions, thanks to Haru's advance warning. Her heart ached at the thought of what justice she would have to dispense on the poor boy, but a peasant riding an Utaku steed was far too offensive a precedent to let stand. She prayed for guidance, from the fortunes, and from her mother's spirit as she made her final preparations.
Now that they were far away from their private moment in the open air, and surrounded by the bustling of the castle, Mai had to put at least some sense of propriety over passion. She gripped Sojiro's hand tightly, and without a word, broke away and mounted in her saddle. Like Otaku of old, whose oath consisted of silent action over spoken words, Mai turned her horse to the northwest path and began her journey back home without another word spoken.

He was flying across the open fields once again. It seemed that one of the few times he was genuinely happy anymore was while he was flying, Saiko mused to himself as he soared across what seemed to be Lion lands. He shuddered to himself a little as he thought of his meeting that he had just left; unfortunately, the only ones who could communicate with him while he was in this state were the Chuda, and he always left those encounters feeling as though he needed a bath. He came near to Kyuden Doji once again, knowing that he could not remain "meditating" for much longer without missing prior meetings. As he flew near to the castle grounds, he spotted the Utaku that had accompanied Sojiro riding hard away to the Northeast, and he saw Sojiro looking longingly after her, before it clicked. He sighed, figuratively of course, and knew he needed to try and patch her first impression of him; he had aroused too much suspicion as it was. He flew after her for a few minutes, thinking of what he knew of her clan, what he knew of her, and smiled a little. He focused his energy, and the wind in Mai's ears became... something else. She would hear a voice, talking as though from very far away, but she would recognize it as that of a young bushi that she had met only a few hours before. Mai-san... you are not the only one to have had your Champion abandon you in this war... remember that... and as sudden as it was there, it was gone. Satisfied his message got through, Saiko returned to Kyuden Doji, quickly finding his way to his room, where his body awaited him. ***** His eyes opened, and he arose from his meditating position in the center of his room, to hear someone outside his room calling for him, saying it was soon to be time for dinner. Saiko stretched a bit, and poured himself a cup of sake. He needed to prepare for the night ahead of him...
