Without further ado, I bring you Sojiro's interview with our very own Obsidian Champion, Daigotsu Thrakhath! This was a lot of fun for us, and I hope everyone else enjoys reading it as much as we enjoyed doing it ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
Sojiro: What was your first exposure to L5R?
Thrak: Oh geez, um...
Sojiro: nothing like a curveball right off the bat
Thrak: It was many many moons ago, and I can't remember if it was the card game or the rpg. My first CCG experience was with a Dragon deck that was thrown together with whatever was handy, I think that was in Lotus edition. My first RPG experience was as a Unicorn samurai in a weird game where my buddies and I took turns GMing each session.
Sojiro: If I remember correctly, Thrak was a Unicorn before joining the spider. Do you have a particular draw to that clan, or is it just coincidence that your first character and Thrak are both unicorns?
Thrak: I think the Unicorn were always my favorite of the great clans, simply because they're significantly different than the other clans. I like the Moto in particular, simply because I love the idea of a screaming mongol horde in the middle of all these mystical and/or honorable samurai. That and I have a soft spot for cavalry charges, I'm sure that was a contributing factor.
Sojiro: I have to admit, the mongol theme is definitely unique and appealing.
Sojiro: What led Thrak to join the Spider?
Thrak: The way I understand Taint, it not only causes physical corruption but slowly drives a man insane as well. Despite that, I like to think something of the original personality remains, and at his heart Thrak was a loyal Unicorn. When he awoke in the Shadowlands not only as a bearer of the Taint but as an undead monster, yet retaining his free will, I'm sure it hit what was left of him pretty hard. The Spider not only gave him a place to belong (the Unicorn would never let him back in, after all), but they gave him a way to focus his Taint-induced insanity and fury so he had a measure of control.
Sojiro: Ah, so it's more or less a case of "A monster I am, lest a monster I become".
Thrak: hehe sure, that's the TL;DR version.![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
Were it not for the Spider I'm sure he would have ended up a frothing madman and died a violent death early in his tainted career.
Assuming zombies can froth. >.>
Sojiro: Sure they can. Unless they are really old and everything has evaporated.... but then they aren't very good zombies, I would think. So, for those of us who are interested (which seems to be everyone, given the amount of questions I got after a little bit of prodding) is Thrak's whole story on the forum?
Thrak: I'm not really sure how to answer that. >.> You mean have I written about him outside the forum?
Sojiro: What I mean is, we are all at least somewhat familiat with evil, scary Daigotsu Thrakhath, but is Moto Thrakhath's story on the forum. If so, where can we read it, and if not, then what part of Thrak's life does the forum cover?
Thrak: Oh I see.
On the forum he was Daigotsu Thrakhath from the get-go, I haven't written anything about Moto Thrakhath there yet. I've toyed with the idea of doing a flashback thread, so to speak, but it never seems to get past the conceptual stage. The forum only covers a small portion of his life; I don't have a precise age in mind, but I get the idea Thrak has been around for a while.
Sojiro: I think a flashback thread would be an awesome idea, personally.
Sojiro: ...must stop chain smoking through the interview.
Thrak: hehe I'm sure I'll get around to it one of these days.![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
Sojiro: Ok, next question, this one is from me.
A lot of us have specific songs that we either identify with our characters, or that we play to get "into" the mindset for the character. If Thrak had an MP3 player out there in the Shadowlands, what are a few of the songs that would be on it?
Sojiro: LOL, almost dated myself by asking if Thrak had a CD player![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Thrak: Thrakhath would probably be a thrash kind of guy, with some other forms of high-energy metal mixed in. I've depicted him listening to much calmer music in-game though, so he would listen to lighter instrumental stuff now and then, depending on the day.
Unsurprisingly his musical taste is similar to mine.![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Sojiro: LOL, it's amazing how that works out, isn't it?
What are your favorite and least favorite IC moments for Thrak?
Thrak: There were a few moments I particularly liked; the one time he got to interact with Great clan samurai and the moment when he found out the Snake clan had been utterly destroyed are the ones that immediately come to mind. As for least favorite, probably his meeting with the Scorpion (I don't remember who he met with specifically, unfortunately). That was something I probably shouldn't have done in the first place, and it didn't really go anywhere.
Thrak: On Deadly Ground, that was the name of the thread.
Sojiro: I expect that there will now be people searching around to find it.
Sojiro: Inquiring minds from within your own ranks would like to know, if Thrak was to choose a second in command, who would it be and why?
Thrak: As far as I know, his options are Saiko (who he's never met), Alesha (who's completely insane), Shokuma (who he's never met)... and that's it. Given that he has yet to interact with other Spider PCs (that are still Spiders anyway), I'm not sure I can answer that question properly.
Sojiro: So the answer is "Nobody, because the only guy who's ever around is a crackpot!"
Thrak: rofl basically. Honestly I haven't followed much of Saiko's or Shokuma's exploits on the forums, so I don't know much about their characters either.
Sojiro: Btw, just in case Thrak ever wants that crazy former Crane dealt with, I know a few people....
>>
<<
Thrak: lol
Sojiro: Next question: How do you, as a player, handle being set up to lose every action the Spider are offered?
Thrak: it's funny you should mention that, 'cuz I saw something in the behind the scenes stuff for the Lord of the Rings movies that's relevant. The idea that despair is a mistake, that no one can truly know what the future holds, and that hope isn't something that should ever die. That and I'm a sucker for fights against impossible odds (and usually it's the good guys stuck in that position, funnily enough
).
Thrak: Well, all that, and it's just a game at the end of the day.
Sojiro: It's kind of ironic that the things the good guys usually fight for in all the epic tales are what keeps the Spider Champion going
Thrak: Don't tell anyone, people might actually get sympathetic to our cause.
We can't have that.![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
Sojiro: LOL, Too late![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
Thrak: Bah, just edit it out in post. That's how these things work right?![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Sojiro: Sure.... I'll do that.....
>>
<<
Thrak: lol
Sojiro:What are Thrak's personal views on each of the great clans?
Thrak: They're all hypocrites, living in a dream world of their own making and unwilling to accept human nature for what it is. The Lion and the Crane are especially bad about it. The Scorpion understand the truth, which makes them the most dangerous, save maybe the Crab. Those guys are tough sons of bitches.
Thrak: He'll always have a soft spot for the Unicorn, tucked deeply away where no one (not even him) can get at it.
But I imagine if he ever somehow lost his Taint and the insanity that went with it, he'd ride right into Shiro Moto and demand the right to kill himself to cleanse his shame.
That or wander the Empire as a ronin, righting wrongs and whatnot. Either is plausible.![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Sojiro: Kung Fu - The Legend Of Thrakhath.
Thrak: lol
That would be a lot of fun to write. Now if only there were a way to remove taint...
Sojiro: Who are Thrak's greatest allies and enemies?
Thrak: I don't imagine he has any real allies. Shoju was at one point, and Daigotsu is the one he's most loyal too, but with friend like Daigotsu a guy doesn't need enemies.
Sojiro: True!
Thrak: His greatest enemy lately seems to be the Crab clan in general, though Shoju was also that at one point as well.![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Senshi seems to want to get rid of the Spider clan, that probably puts him on Thrak's enemy list.
Thrak: But the two of them have never come into conflict, directly or indirectly.
I think the moral of this story is that I don't RP with other people enough.
Sojiro: Well, you should fix that. Obviously Thrak has more fans that you thought.
So, in that vein...
Thrak: lol so it would seem.
I've got a scheme to get him past the Wall and into the Empire, we'll see where that goes.
Sojiro: What characters are on your list, as a player, for "I want to interact with that character".
Thrak: lol I'd like to meet those Spider PCs I mentioned before in-game, for one thing. Other than them... Utaku Mai or Iuchi Ozora, being the most active Unicorns, would be interesting for him to meet. I feel like a meeting with Senshi would just end in death, so that might not be such a good idea. Based on what you said about Those Who Seek, Thrak and Sojiro might have an interesting interaction.
Thrak: Might as well say Haruka too. She's met all the other Spiders at this point, might as well complete the set.![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Sojiro: LOL, "I should hate you... let's go drinking instead".
Thrak: IF ONLY THRAK COULD GET DRUNK
*cough*
Sojiro: So sad...
Thrak: One of the many reasons I've considered retconing his undeath.
Sojiro: LOL, I just got this mental image of Thrak, drunk to the gills at the wall, laughing like a madman and flinging molotoc cocktails at the crab![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
"FFFFFFF UUUUUUUU!"
Thrak: rofl
Sojiro: So, Kyoso or Akuma?
Thrak: Akuma, totally.
Sojiro: Why?
Thrak: Based on my limited understanding, Akuma's all about blood and killing stuff. Thrak's all about that to, so it works.
Although admittedly I don't know much about Kyoso.
If you'd asked him before Shiro Hiruma, he would have told you oni summoning is for those too weak to do the job themselves. Now he's more willing to entertain the idea.
Sojiro: I see. Means to an end, they are.
Sojiro: How does Thrak feel about Shoju and Sprinkles trying to make their own way?
Thrak: Sprinkles isn't even on his radar, to be honest. Shoju's a traitor to the clan, but at least now he's fighting against the Empire instead of trying to join it.
Sojiro: So tell me more about this feud between Thrak and Shoju.
Thrak: They worked together under the same banner for a while, even went to help defend Toshi Ranbo together (or some other really important place) back while the Spider were doing their emissary thing in the click game. I'm sure there was mutual respect between the two of them at the time, Thrak might have even been feeling a bit of loyalty from his old self at the time.
Thrak: Shoju leaving the clan to go join the Empire that had betrayed them was simply unfathomable to him, so naturally Thrak saw Shoju as a traitor and treated him as such, despite Daigotsu's decree that they were to be left alone.
The fact that Shoju was betrayed by the Empire a second time was hilarious to him, as depicted in a recent thread on the subject.
I'm not sure how he feels about Shoju at this point, but I imagine he's less angry than he used to be, given the circumstances.
He's not as high on Thrak's priority list, in any case.
Sojiro: With Alesha and Yoee joining the spider, does the spider clan have a greater influence than before, or will they still be relegated to the background?
Thrak: They're both pretty high-profile defections, but I don't know that it'll affect their influence much. I'm not a very good judge of such things though.
Sojiro: Without revealing any secrets, what are the Spider privare chambers like?
Thrak: hehe very civil actually. We're pretty laid-back about everything
We're also planning to take over the world of course. Our master plan will be revealed in due time.
Sojiro: Of course. But isn't every clan, really?
Thrak: lol I can't see the Dragons plotting to take over the world.
I'm sure everyone else is though.
Sojiro: That's a good point. How are things looking for the coming conflict with the Crab, and eventually the Scorpion?
Thrak: I'm sure some good writing will come out of it.
I'm also sure we'll get our asses handed to us in the click game.
But we're not going down without a fight.
Sojiro: Well, rumor has it that perhaps the fortune of coding will favor the Spider a bit in the coming conflict![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
Thrak: hehe I've heard that rumor, we'll see. If we get too much of an advantage people will cry to high heaven about it.
Sojiro: Meh. Screw 'em. The spider should be fucking terrifying.![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Thrak:But really, how long can the Empire fight itself AND a horde of screaming monsters and twisted samurai at the same time? Something's gotta give. xD
Sojiro: Precisely![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
Thrak: Maybe you shouldn't include that, lol.
People might get ideas.
Sojiro: I mean.... I harbor no secret Spider sympathies at all. Honest...
>>
<<
I mean it.
Thrak: Of course, I understand. Such a thing would be truly scandalous.
Sojiro: Scandalized vultures from Shiro Moto to the Golden City... that does have a certain appeal to it![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Thrak: hehe
Sojiro: How does Thrak feel about Winter Court? Does he have a particular imperial bride that he would like to see on the throne?
Thrak: Couldn't care less.
Sojiro: LOL
Thrak: Sorry, but it's the truth.![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Sojiro: Oh, I completely get it![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
Sojiro: Any long term plans for Thrak?
Thrak: I almost never have long-term plans when I write, actually. I tend to play fast and loose and let the chips fall where they may, to use a couple of cliches.
Taking him into the Empire will hopefully drive him in a new direction and give me more inspiration. I would like to resolve the whole Shoju thing at some point, and I'm sure that's in his future, but beyond that I don't really have anything planned. I just write, and whatever happens happens.
Sojiro: I see.
Well sir, it has been a blast interviewing you, but I will let you get to bed now.
Thrak: hehe it was fun being interviewed.
Hopefully people will enjoy it.
Sojiro: And, on behalf of Rokugan, thanks for letting me mess with your sleep schedule a bit![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
