A Shinoburo storyline
Kyuden Otomo: During Winter Court
It was late. Far too late for Rini to be walking home alone. She had just had her first kiss and was so excited. A young Kakita samurai had taken notice of her and was asked her to join him stargazing. She agreed of course. A mere servant girl like her being asked to join a samurai. It was what all young women dreamed of.
She was humming to herself as she recalled how he told her she was beautiful and then kissed her. Being so distracted she didn't notice how empty the streets were. She knew her way around the city and took all the short cuts she normally would have to get home, but during the day these streets were busy at night they were empty.
Her humming caught the attention of Otomo Fugisawa. Fugisawa was out drinking all night "celebrating". Being thirty-five ears old and having a large gut on him, he'd been drinking more than a moderate amount of saki. He rounded a corner and saw Rini walking down the alley alone. She was young. Just beginning to become a woman. He looked around to make sure he was alone.
Girl! What are you doing out so late? he kept his voice low but gave it an edge to let her know she was in trouble.
Rini's heart nearly skipped a beat. She was so lost in her daydreaming that the samurai's appearance shocked her. And by the the tone in his voice he was not pleased to see her. I-I was just going home. I was out stargazing and lost track of how later it was. Please forgive me. She bowed low and waited for a response before rising.
Fugisawa licked his lips and smiled. As small as she was her head was about groin level when she bowed. He walked up to her and until his crouch was touching the top of her head. He instantly began to get excited. You are out past curfew. You will have to pay a fine.
She could feel his stiffness against the top of her head and began to panic. Please! I did not know there was a curfew! I have no money! I just want to go home! Please!
You have no money? Well then you will just have to pay your fine some other way eh? He reached down grabbed her shoulders and pushed her against the wall. Before she got a chance to scream his hand was over her mouth. Shut up! If you make a sound I will kill you. No one will care if the body of a peasant girl is found in the streets.
Tears poured from her eyes but her body went limp. She was submitting just as he expected. Ripped her top open and began kissing along her neck.
I see Fugisawa, a voice as clear as water spoke, you are both an honorless pig and a rapist. And soon you will be dead.
Fugisawa stumbled backward and reached for his katana. He drew it quickly a took a defensive stance against the man approaching him. His long white hair gave him away as a Crane. Although while he wore blue armor it was a deeper shade of blue than the Crane typically used and he wore no mon.
We had a deal. We paid you and you were supposed to sneak our Lion friend into Winter Court and help prevent the peace talks. Instead you betrayed him, and had him arrested as a spy for Toturi. Did you think we would not take notice? Did you think we would not take revenge? He rested his hand on his blade hilt and spread his legs apart waiting.
A Kakita! It had to be a Kakita! He thought.
You are the honorless pig here. I was awarded great glory for catching your spy. And I will be awarded more when I deliver your dead body. Fugisawa charged, hoping to catch the Crane off guard before he could draw his sword. His hopes were in vain.
The duelist trained endlessly for fights just like this. His sword released with a swiftness unmatched by most any in the Empire. His blade moved upwards catching the thrusting blade and knocking it harmlessly aside. With only the slightest movement of his wrist the blade twisted and pointed at Fugisawa. The fat mans own momentum from the thrust carried him into the steel, piercing through his neck. Fugisawa's lungs gasped for air but filled only with blood. Within moments he lay dead.
Rini was curled into a ball on the ground. She was digging her fingers into her legs but felt nothing due to the fear that had gripped her. She dare not make a sound. But after the samurai had finished killing her attacker he turned towards her. You are safe now.
He walked up to her and knelt beside her. His voice was hollow and emotionless but rang out perfectly like a fine poet speaks. This never happened. You saw nothing. He laid a bag in front of her with a few koku in it.
Fear still had enough of a hold on her that she couldn't find her voice so she just nodded. Good. Now go. She grabbed the bag of money and ran away as fast as she could.
The Crane watched her as she left then waited a few more moments. Soon two men came running down the ally pushing a cart. Amazingly the cart seemed to make no noise. Make sure the body is disposed of in a way that it can't be found. This is Winter Court. We don't want a murder to cause a scene.
Shinoburo left the men to clean up his mess. He quietly made his way out of the city and began his ride south. He was still unsure of why he was called in to make this kill. He easily could have been killed by any number of other members. But once again he did what he was ordered to do.
