Name: Mirumoto Atsumura Shigen
Age: early thirties
Role: Shigen serves the Shogunate in the Capacity of Chui, The Dragon clan as a strong blade to back up the Kitsuki's keen minds, and the Empire as a whole, Tengoku, and his common man, as a hunter of Tsukai and other blasphemous menaces.
Training: Shigen was instructed in Niten Ichi-Ryu at the Iron Mountain Dojo, Studied the Kitsuki method at the Dojo of the Open Eye, and brought those teachings together at the Great Fall Dojo. During his Musha-Shugyo, he spent time in most of the other clan's lands, gaining some insight into their fighting styles as well.
Appearance and Personality: The years have not been kind to Shigen. Gray already creeps into his dark brown hair at his temples, and his body is a road map of scars, altho his tattoos remain unmarred. He is short and stout, but carries himself erect, and makes a point to keep his arms in good repair, altho recent events have left little time to replace damaged gear. His belongings are, while appropriate to the situation, rather plain. His courtly Kimono is always in a fine state, as it rarely has an opportunity to be worn. In such case as he may do so, he also often smells of orange blossoms.
His appearance is very sincere, in so much that he is as plain in personality as he is in dress. When young warriors speak of great and glorious wars, he remembers blood baths, and the lean year that followed, when there were few people left to tend the fields. When brash warriors boast of great feats, he recalls the time his wanderings took him to the wall, and what horrors he saw faced down with not a word of bragging. Yet they are young, and must learn for themselves. As the Tao says, I cannot give a man wisdom, he must find it for himself.
In court, he is very respectful, keenly aware that skill with the blade will not serve his masters if his tongue betrays them. Unlike many Bushi, he actively enjoys court, he simply has little time for such matters. The verbal games remind him significantly of the parables found in the Tao, and are almost an opportunity to meditate upon them for him.
In short, he is Humble, Practical, and Thinks far more than he says.
History: The Atsumura are a family born of Ronin. The Chaos of the Clan Wars and Second Day of Thunder gave that Ronin an opportunity to change that. Having served in the Wolf Legion, he became acquainted with his Dragon hosts. Mirumoto's style is a very open style, and it's dojos are far more welcoming than many others. When the matters settled, Atsumura was allowed to swear fealty to the master of the Iron Mountain Dojo, becoming Ji-Samurai. Shigen is a son of Atsumura, and of the first generation born in service to the Dragon
As is typical for his family, he was trained in the Niten style, and passed his gempukku with dignity and pride. At this time, His father considered it important for his Son to travel the land, and gain understanding of the Empire as a whole, to uphold the Atsumura's worldly perspective.
Shigen's Musha-Shugyo was particularly brutal. While his time wandering the Northern lands was generally easy, and he found welcome and wisdom, it was not to last. As he traveled farther South, he came to know the particular dislike the Crane, Lion, and Scorpion hold for Ronin, and the state of turmoil that plagues those clans. Many battles and feuds was his blade hired to for, many for the most trivial of reasons. Yet he could not turn back, there was still much to learn. When his path finally reached the farthest Southwest, he once more found welcome, but no comfort. The Wall invites all warriors who would stand against the darkness, yet few heed that call. He will not speak of the horrors he saw there, or in the lands beyound... but many nights he sleeps fitfully, clutching a small jade talisman so hard that it's imprint is clear in his hand the next day, wracked with nightmares that do not fade with the dawn.
When his time had passed on the Wall, he ventured to the decadent Isles of the Mantis, where he hid from his life for some time. Many distractions were made available to him, distractions that offered relief from the horrors he had seen. Yet somewhere thru the haze of opium smoke, he remembered he Was Shigen, son of Atsumura, vassal of the Mirumoto, and that his life was not his own to squander. He cleansed himself and left behind his time surrounded by Silk and Spice. he wandered amongst the Minor Clans, and spent much time living amongst and protecting members of the Brotherhood of Shinsei. Thus did his life finally come full circle. He understood what it meant to be a warrior, to be a monk, to be victorious, and to lose more than knew he had. He had been strong and weak, he had been heroic and craven. He had been a man.
Internalizing the strange dichotomy of Bushido and the Tao, he returned to his family's home, and took up his name once more. Now he could properly serve the Dragon. With all he had seen, with all the injustice, and with all the evil that hid right under the nose of honourable lords, his path was clear. He sought training with the Kitsuki, and eventually was accepted to the Great Fall Dojo, where his combat technique was wed to the insightful practices of the Wise Ones. Thus prepared, his service to his clan began in earnest.
