{looking across the room} Hyuu-sama, am I mistaken or did I feel the ineffectual sting of an adolescent Scorpian? Perhaps he should commission you, Master Artisan of the Crane, to create, for him, a proper masque. The design on his seems to have faded. {With a smirk, Kioshi rises from his pillow and makes his way to the edge of the room.} Or perhaps Akodo-san could create something for him. Imagane what a lovely masque Monkey-fur would make.

(A Monkey bushi who has been quietly standing beside the Monkey Courtier turns to his companion.) The smallest scorpion can be deadly, Fuzake-san. I wonder if the gentle children of Lady Doji remember this. Perhaps they belive art shall save them. Are scorpions well known for not stinging artisans? Of course if one has the strength of virtue, most stings are barely noticed.

"It is interesting is it not" muses Doji Hyuu "How an individual can lose his objectivity when presented with patronage? There are some who leap instinctively to the defense of others without, it would seem, thinking as to who it is they are defending. One can only conclude they do so out of concern for the material benefits of that patronage, the protection etc, for the only other explanation is blindness, and we owe our fellow Samurai more credit than that"
"It is also instructive when those who converse with others are unable to see them as anything other than their Clan. It must be very boring to be these people, for to them Winter Court would only be populated by eight persons - or I suppose, maybe twenty-one or twenty-two" *A brief smile to the Monkey follows over a sip of tea, and then he continues* "It does disappoint, though, when one expects insight and instead receives only stereotypes. Particularly for those who pride themselves on insight"
"But perhaps most disappointing of all is those who bring Clan loyalties into friendly games of skill. If we cannot compete against those whom we share a Lord with in such a forum, then we miss a valuable chance to hone our skills through competition, and thus risk failing our Lord"

"There is a strange paradox, Fuzake-san." Toku Kenpachi says after a few moments of awed silence. "In the very acts that a people wish to be idolized for, they cast aside when not desired. Perhaps with murmurs of sterotypical behavior. In the same sense they hold dearest to what they wish not to be seen as. Personally I belive it less sterotypical and more iconic. My own clan was founded by a man that would one day become the Fortune of Virtue. We can only work tirelessly to become mere shades of our founder, but we will never stop trying. I can only assume the same ideal is held by all men."
"I find it unfathomable that one would be so uninformed as to forget the words and actions of Daimyos. My own Lord commented that he prefered blue to red and it appears that some were busy protecting identities to notice this."
"And I belive I may be able to procure more than enough fur for a mask, if any were inclined to obtain one. Perhaps, so as not to ruffle the delicate feathers of some, the honorable Kaiu could be called upon to repair a cracked shell. It would not be a fine as the work of some; think of the posibilities though. Such a shell could easily deflect sting and laugh alike.

" I have always admired the Crane for thier brilliance and mastery of eloquence. I know there are many that would gladly follow them. I'm curious as to why my mind would wander to the words of the Little Teacher at this moment. 'Following a false light can only lead you deeper into darkness.' Truely the wisom of the Little Teacher blots out other forms of brilliance, and most certainly false lights.

"On that Toku-san we can certainly agree. I must say it is very pleasing to me to be able to enjoy an amicable discussion among friends where all are possessed of goodwill and politeness. Truly there are times when the cut and thrust of the courts, while invigorating and necessary, wears on me, as I imagine the struggles of honourable battle might wear on my bushi cousins. As I am sure they must periodically retreat from battle to rest and reflect, so must we all do the same - and in what better company can we do so?"
"But this contemplation brings to mind a question I would appreciate it if my most honourable present friends would assist me in answering. What is more honourable, to be elevated by the word of the Emperor for great deeds of one's own, or to be elevated by the good name of one's ancestors?"

Ichiro contemplates the question as he sips his tea. He sat queitly listening to all retorts and slights, but Hyuu's question of made his mind ponder.
Doji-san, that is truly a grand question. I for one can only answer that to be elevated by the Emperor for one's own deeds, tends to hold more worth in my eyes. As the other way around seems to have one's honorable ancestors as a crutch to lean on when one's owns means are not enough. I still honor my ancestors, though. I just do it by by honoring their deeds by performing my own.
Toku-san I do thank you for your offer of a fur mask but I think what I would use for cold weather suits me more than what you may have had in mind.
Ichiro goes back to sipping his tea. His eyes more focused on the movements of others in the room.

ooc: I will reply but need to find time to for a decent post. I will replace this ooc post with an IC one shortly. You might want to wait for it - probably some time tonight (12.05pm here now)
Edit and IC: The two Otomo judges whisper to each other and smile at every well thought out comment. So far they have smiled while following the back and forth of Kenpachi and Hyuu although Yushahime frowned at the almost lecture length comments coming from both at times. She did have to stiffle a chuckle at some of the apt chosen words though. Her biggest sign of approval so far was nodding her head at Kioshi's quick but amusing comments.
The other bushi, shugenja and numerous courtiers have quietly observed so far, indulging in tea and some prepared snacks, standing near allies or otherwise preparing themselves as the competition speeds up. The first few shots have been fired and now the battle lines meet... and it is a free for all.
The Akodo's monkey friend departs him and joins Kenpachi with a polite nod and smile, contributing to his efforts with an audible "quite so" on occassion. The lion shrugged at this and went to the side of the room to inspect the painting. Meanwhile the Yasuki sipped his tea, exchanging some very light talk of trade with the Mantis

A diminutive tortoise speaks up, green robes flowing ably...
"I am certain that the Scorpion would never stumble along the path of worth... Bushido includes humilty, and to think that any samurai deserves or merits anything, other than to serve the Emperor, is a failure of the very foundation of Bushido and Rokugan. We are all but mirrors of the celestial heirarchy, and surely the words of the young Shosuro were not intended to dull the power of Chugo ("Duty") merely to extol merit... Much like this beautiful painting on the wall here, it's only merit is that it pleases the Emperor's winter court, the painting itself (stops and looks in the direction of the Shosuro)... has no value at all."
And then the Tortoise steps back from the middle of the room.

ooc: Well done to all so far. I'm very happy to see so many new participants join or reveal themselves. This has made my day. I'd like to see some compliments offered next that are actually disguised insults ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) . Also, be careful with some of the more direct or cutting comments. I am pleased to see nobody has directly insulted another by name or made eye contact with someone they are speaking ill of. That's exactly the right behaviour. Right, now for an IC bit... IC: Yushahime couldn't help but grin at Kasuga's comment. It was almost too direct and forward but it wasn't what one expected of a Tortiose Clan member and was delivered in a general enough way to be acceptable. She snapped her face into place above her mouth to hide her smile. For his part Ren started sipping some tea. Ichigo seemed unsure about his approval. He was looking forward to a come back of some sort however. This was delivered by the Mantis, who halted his gossip with the Yasuki for a moment. "Others would suggest its highest merit would be its ability to please the Emperor as well as his court but that its ability to one day please the other glorious Lords should never be so disregarded. Furthermore its ability to reflect the beauty of nature to praise the spirits and its contribution to the sound mind of the Emperor's servants should never be forgotten." He walks over to the painting, visibly inspecting it with a smile. The quiet Mirumoto bushi continues this train of thought "Perhaps even if it were never seen that little painting would still deserve some respect for the noble intentions behind its creation. A yojimbo never seeks glory, he waits for the opportunity to obey or protect his Lord. They would humbly believe they do not deserve merit for what is expected of them, but meeting these expectations should mean they at least deserve respect". A few participants raise an eyebrow, unsure if he is speaking of philosophy or truly participating in the competition. Yushahime flutters her fan and reaches for some green tea by her chair, leaning towards the Mirumoto in the process

"I belive that the Dragon's wisdom is very apt." Toku says, setting his tea down. "I have heard it said that a Dragon's wisdom is like a mountain wind. I disagree. I have heard the wind stop."
"Have we not all borrowed names from our honorable ancestors? We must return it to them untarnished. So by reciving the praise of the Emperor, we not only are elavated but our ancestors along with us. So where some see a cruch, I see a guide for honorable action."

"A guide is useful" the Mantis agrees "I think guides are useful, both guides for behaviour and of an area one is not used to. The best guides are those who are oldest and wisest in my opinion. Ah, some here are fine guides I'm sure, although only a few seem proud of their age" He moves away from the painting and walks past the Akodo who is wearing an overly long and ostentatious kimono; a style once popular "Why, I can spot a few individuals here with some of the longest running dress sense... how quaint. A shame such clothes can impede their wits". He ends up by a servant and gestures for him to move as he claims the space

{Kioshi sets his now empty cup and moves toward the exit. He bows to the judges.} Thank you, most gracious host and honourable judges, but I must retire to train my body. Should you still be hosting this entertainment when I return, I will gladly participate once more. My congratulations to the one whom the judges bestow victory. {He bows once more to the room, and leaves}
