"Perhaps such clothing is more of a distraction. I await the Lion's roar with great expectation. Though I'm told the lioness is far deadlier in nature. Or perhaps the insight of the Mantis is apt. It is through thier great wisdom that we learned the word is stronger than the blade after all."

"Indeed we are indebted to the Mantis. They strive so fiercely to make the Empire a place where blades rule and words and laws mean nothing. I for one find myself often thinking of what such an Empire would be. It is a memorable concept indeed."

"Speaking of blades ruling, I still wait for the roar. Perhaps some are thinking of the wise words of Akodo-kami. 'When your enemy is more powerful than you, strike quick and hard, and retreat.' Perhaps a third of the advice is being used."

"I do believe, Toku-san that they maybe waiting for you to leave here. At that point they would pounce upon you as if you were Kyuden Tonbo. An act that I even think that your wondrously clever mind could not truly escape."
Icricho stands up from his tea setting and starts to move about the floor in a counter clock-wise pattern. Slowly mimicking the circling of a predator.

"'No enemy was ever overcome by repeating the same strategy. Innovation creates victory.' I belive Akodo-kami said in the same book. By pouncing on a single soul they would show fear of my words. I know no Lion would dare do a dishonorable action, and I know I could never teach that. Perhaps they could follow the teachings of another."

The kasuga shuffles forward....
Pushing back some hair, the tortoise hatamoto speaks plainly...
"I cannot help but notice this candle holder. While crude and hard in it's manufacture, it will last for centuries, while hundreds of bright candles will burn out day after day... While we enjoy the light the candles provide, we do not linger our gaze upon then, they simply are. Were we to grab the candle, it would surely burn our hand, but if we go about, without notice or comment, the candle will soon enough be extinguished, while the candle holder may remain. The lack of illumination of the candle holder is its very virtue...Don't you see, my lion, scorpion and Toku friends, how much we can learn from the candle holders?

"There is wisdom in such words. Be crude and hard and you will last for many years. Perhaps the Crab and Tortoise are closer than many of us thought. Personally I prefer illumination from other sources."

"Spoken from the canopy of a shady tree. He chatters and throws offal at a slow and ponderous target. Careful where you step, oh ponderous one. Else you may step in the mess the cacophonous tree climber leaves for you."
Ichiro continues his circuit of room. He observes the various pieces of art stopping at a framed Haiku. He fans himself and nods in respectful understanding of the piece.

"If the tree is the one where Togashi-kami heard the words of the Little Teacher then the tree is a very wise place to be. I may lack the shell of others but wisdom is it's own reward. The pincers are ignored, the tail watched."

" the first cold shower even the monkey seems to want a little coat of straw
I think it wise that you head that warning so high in your perch, this time of year. I will be in my splendid home."
Ichiro continues on his route back to his seat. He settles in and politely request more tea.

"A little coat is simple, as is my home, the building not the tree." Kenpachi says with a small smile. "A spear is a simple weapon." Instead of the words of a single haiku I'll choose to heed the words of Akodo-kami, 'A simple spear makes one man an obstacle that can daunt a dozen cavalry.' Perhaps there is those that choose to ignore that simplicity can be just as splended as other things in life. A haiku is simple thought before it reaches paper after all."

the Tortoise shrugs...
"I must apologize that as a mere Kasuga, I must not understand this game of Sadane. I appreciate your instruction. When we play it in the Imperial Court, I seldom see so many direct insults tied to one's clan or name. I thank you for your tuteledge in the manner in which it is to be played here in the lands of the Doji. And also, might I compliment the Doji on their fine hosting by allowing just about anyone into this court, regardless of manner or station..."

(ooc: mmm let's move away from this. Shorter and sharper but more subtle comments would be appreciated. Compliment time...)
Yushahime nods at Kasuga's words and looks at her fellow judges and sees them doing the same. She decides to intervene after a glance from Ren-sama.
She claps her hands once and addresses the participants "Let us move on to something more directly praiseworthy in nature to increase the mood of the room, namely compliments, rather than the history and philosophy covered so eloquently thus far. Please do try to avoid tying your comments with Clan names; it can cause lasting unease and that is not the aim of this little game. So let's bring smiles to our faces through the power of flattery please..."
Yushahime nods to continue and the two Otomo both gesture that they agree and would like to see a good "compliment". Silence hangs in the air momentarily

"It is most fitting when those who provide praise also provide an example of the behaviour they deem praiseworthy, particularly in their own persons"

"I can praise the one with the initiative to speak first; for they are quick in action and of the tongue. If such speed were accompanied by motion or actions less wooden then we would all be in the presence of greatness" the Mantis courtier offered, speaking aloud to the rest of the room.
A Shiba bushi struck quickly in return "the wisdom to hold an action until after a rival has spoken... such cleverness works wonders in the court. A shame it would not on the battlefield but, well, that is an area not all here have experience of". He grinned smugly for a moment before realising a good number of eyes in the room were now regarding him with malice. He eased back a footstep instinctually
"Some work so hard to fight the enemies of their clan that they return to court tired from too much time on the frontline" offers the Mirumoto finishing with a rare smile. Some courtiers eagerly nod at this comment
The Yasuki courtier from earlier studies the Mantis, finding a fault with his simple wakizashi. Averting his eyes from the Mantis at the last second he quips "A samurai's soul that is simple speaks of humility, it reminds me of some humble ronin I encountered once"
Different groups in the room begin talking amongst themselves, exchanging smiles and disguised pleasantries about all they could notice about each other - from their looks and history to their comments in the competition and manner of movement
