Taken from the old forums just so we Role Players don't get confused or forget the What,Why, and How of the "Emerald Empire" reality.
As Alison Petrisek stated:
"Our point of divirgence is the ascension of Hantei Naseru to the throne. He takes the name Hantei the 40th rather than Toturi the 3rd, in honour of his foster father, Hantei the 16th. The Toturi line is extinguished.
(Formerly Toturi ) Kaneka is Shogun and Isawa (formerly Toturi) Sezaru is the Voice of the Emperor.
We are beginning the year 1164. There have been several years of (mostly) peace since his ascension. Hantei the 40th is as yet unmarried and has not gone off wandering Rokugan.
In CCG terms, this is after Gold but before Diamond Edition. however, most of our source material is drawn from the RPG source books.
The Spider clan have not been officially recognized as a great clan by the Emperor.
A note on player positions within the game: By common consensus, the player with the top ranking on a leader board is Champion of that clan/Masterof that Element. While we are not creating NPCs for these positions, the title is primarialy honorary and used for RP.
The only current magistrate positions in the game are clan magistrates. There are no Imperial or Emerald Magistrates. These titles may be introduced as mastery rewards in the future, but at this time, if you are a magistrate, it is for your clan."
Now in the spirit of good play- lets Enjoy what Jay and Alison ,with the help of Rob, has given us L5R fanatics for free.
Thank you guys ;D

Which means, Spider clan should be moved to minior clans ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Incorrect. If the Spider Clan hasn't been recognized, we're not a Minor Clan. Minor Clans have to be recognized to gain Clan status and Imperial Protection. Technically, there is no "Spider Clan", we're a bunch of unrecognized bushi who saved a lot of people at the right time and place. (As always, in discussions like this, please correct me if I'm wrong.)

That sounds an awful lot like ronin.... perhaps we should take a leaf from Toturi's book and do something about these ruffians ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I kid, kind of, I'll still poke you with a finger of jade. ;D

On the note of the Spider 'clan' at the early time it was best known as a ronin Otokodate. They got a good amount of support from the Unicorn clan as they tended to take on the role heroes of the people.
They've carefully crafted an image for the others to see them and in Rokugan public image is everything.

I have to ask, as the "official Scorpion position" claims it as a well known fact that the Spider Clan are Shadowlands tainted / servants of Fu Leng; is this a known fact in the empire? I was under the impression that it wasn't. I want to get things straight if I'm going to do any RP.

Maybe Scorpion knowledge states that it is a well known fact that the Spider clan is a bunch tainted peepz? That does not stop you to be a follower of Fu-leng with out the taint does it? I personally think you can get away RP'ing a a non tainted human that does follow Daigotsu and his twisted teachings.

This also means that Kokujin is not dead yet.
Would it be possible to have some scary evil tattooed monk craziness going on?
I would even play a Bakemono if I could take the Kokujin name.
*I was the Corrupted Dragon Movement during HE in my neck of the woods. Corrupt tattooed dragon dueling!!!!!!!
I would even Seppuku again.

as far as the official scorpion post, you can always consider that as it was written by the scorpion it may be nothing more then propaganda. On the other side however in EE just about everyone has been to the shadowlands at least once and has SEEN just how tainted the spider's primary holdings are.

If our current timeline is pre- or early Diamond, there should be no spider clan. They developed later...
At the beginning of Diamond Edition, Shahai frees her master (Iuchiban) in order to get Daigotsu returned from the dead. It works, but Iuchiban deposes Daigotsu as master of the City of the Lost and take control of the shadowlands. Daigotsu wages a civil war in that dark land to take back what he built, throughout diamond edition. By the time of Lotus Edition, he has succeeded, and the Bloodspeaker is dead for real-reals, thanks to Sezaru & Kisada. During Lotus, Daigotsu begins forming families under his banner, and abandons the City of the Lost. Throughout Lotus the Spider clan is slowly being put together, until Samurai, when they were wiped out -or so it was believed. At the end of Samurai, they came back and sued for legitimacy.
I only played for half of the above mentioned timed, so I'd appreciate it if another player could tell me if I got it right? If I did, the 'Spider Clan' are still simply 'The Lost', living in their city in the Shadowlands. And I'm not certain who's in charge... I'd suggest letting Iuchiban stay in his tomb and Daigotsu stay dead, so the ranking member of the Lost can hold a title (Dark Lord of the Shadowlands, perhaps?)

I think this thread should be stickied so new players can know what the setting is. I know some things might need a little clarification still, but without the basis of the timeline it might be hard for new players to RP. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

It is pretty helpful...
Perhaps we should include the clear departures from the timeline...
IE...
I: Winter Court : Held in Doji lands after great political manuevering. II: Yobanjin Invasion: Started in Unicorn Lands, now spreading to other regions. III: Emperor in Seclusion
It's a good start, although we could probably add a few more items for those of us familiar with the intricacies of cannon.

I have to agree with Kasuga - as this goes on longer it'd be really hand to have a proper timeline
