That Katana was given from Crane Daimyo to Lion Daimyo. Not to one of the daimyo's servants...if the crane daimyo gave a sword to Akodo x who fought battle y then that could have been seen as an insult. On the given example a daimyo offered a blade to another. Since they have the same lord (the emperor) there is no insult, same thing with receiving such a gift from imperial sources...
But you are right that there can be many exceptions to this rule. Mostly though specific equipment, like the first sword i held, or the sword I held at that battle etc...That takes the meaning of the present from being a masterly crafted sword to being a prized personal possession...
I think I am coming off as polemic with some of my threads...I am sorry
