It was a gambit.
This flanking assault was a gambit. This strategy was made when the courier that Ichiro Kojuri sent to the shogun returned with non-response.
Like in a game of go, sometimes sacrifices are made to gain an upper hand.
Ichiro Kojuri did not tell the other champions that his strategy was a gambit and will cost many lives. If they already knew it would not matter now. He was relying on Kaneka’s more experienced tactical mind to see through his plan and take advantage of it. Kojuri hopes that the diversion and partial thinning of the yobanjin front lines can give the shogun the vantage point to break to the lines and go straight to the neck of the serpent. To sever its head, to once and for all end its threat.
The general of the minor clan alliance could not see through the chaos whether the army of the shogun is exploiting the advantage given to them by the alliance’s flanking maneuver.
Several hours’ way into the late afternoon and the battle rages on. More samurai fell from the shear number of enemies that overwhelms them. It looks grim. The gaijin army is trying to crush the alliance in a pincer move.
“Fall back! Fall back! Everyone fall back!”, Ichiro Kojuri bellowed as he gave a kick to a yobanjin in front of him. The commanders gave the signal for an ordered retreat to base camp.
Those samurai who were strong, able and willing form a defensive barrier for the rest to establish a retreat and to carry the wounded and dying if capable. Another signal was made for the units of scouts to move in to lend support for the retreat.
The minor clan alliance’s archers who were put on reserve to protect their spellcasters moved in to provide cover fire. Arrows and magical fire rained on those foolish who pursued the retreating army.
The rest of the spellcasters sent forth messages to their respective masters of the impending withdrawal of the minor clan alliance forces back to Badger territory.
The march back to Shiro Ichiro will be a slow one.
