I may sound simplistic, unsophisticated, but guys, this is a game! Let the gamers play as they please.
Strategies do exist and will continue to exist, there is nothing "unfair" because the rules are very clear and many here are willing to supply answers to those who still maintain doubts. If they change the rules, simply the strategies will also change.
And I don't see any reason to change anything. I even think that is rather just, one that is dedicated to one skill to become a master of that skill.
I fail miserably to find any issue in the way things are.

Koichi leads the spellcraft competition with 845. That means, to even touch my Skill points, (1076 = 1056 from points + 20 prior) Koichi would need 231 more points added to his total ROLL. in just skill points, that is 116 skill points, another 30 levels, which means he would be level 220. For simplicity's sake, Assume that there are no knew items between now and then for spellcraft. His dice roll wont change much. leveling takes longer as you level up. I'm not sure how fast Koichi is turning levels, but 18 levels behind him, and not wasting fate when I'm awake (6a - midnight) I'm leveling 1 per 3 days right now. I'm not saying that he couldn't stay ahead of me, but it would be incredibly difficult. Especially considering, that he has the 1st or 2nd highest roll of any of the competitions right now, its not like everyone would be that high. There's one minor flaw here. You assume that I've dumped all my spare points in one go into spellcraft when the competition started. I probably need a handful of levels more, but 231 points is not a problem. I could dump mt remaining points now, but it would be unstrategic game-wise to do so. Just so you know, I had 400 spellcraft during the time Taeshik was adamant that he should be Jade Champion (this was way way back then). Personally I was gunning for that position as well (plus the fact that Taeshik was an Agasha, and I'm a Tamori). I moved it up to 600 by the start of 2011, and haven't moved it since. When the competition started and I found out 600 wasn't going to cut it, I dumped an extra 50 more.

Hm.... Now that is interesting. Thank you for that information. Out of curiosity, How close could you get to the 1k mark?
Feel free to PM me if you don't want it to be public knowledge.

I'm probably giving myself a disadvantage by doing so, but for the sake of this discussion I'll post it here. 700 (base) + 75 (equipment bonus) + 60 (average roll) + 100 (50 unspent points * 2) = 935 My spare isn't actually 50 but lets put it at that for now.

What I think about "keeping" points... Jay should make a really nice items... that are like R: <A skill> +100/+200 (needed) + <B skill> +100/+150 / high honor and/or glory (or taint) B: <A/B skill> +50 That way, if a player wants to wear it and get a nice bonus... he/she needs to spend those points on skills required. We do forget... that this game is evolving... sure, we have new players that are having low skills... but most of us are playing this game from the begining and lvl 150+ is something common (even for those that log on once a day) So... Jay should think about the ways to "steal" our precious skill points that we are holding dearly And I say it as a player.

Hmmm.... now that could be interesting. This, combined with the idea of "super high end jobs" could encourage people to come off their points.
Another reason that I like these solutions is that it sort of lends itself towards fabricating an "end game" that players can work towards. Like Kasumi said, there are a decent amount of high xp players in the game now. I'm level 176. That's only good for 41st in the game.
I think it was mentioned that you can earn enough skill points to equip almost everything in game by 55/60. By level 125, I had rounded out all of my skill so that I could travel anywhere but 200 battle MWK on my own, without needing to change items, as well as had my 4 class skills at 50+.
Now, I'm level 176, and I'm over 400+ raw spellpower score, and outside of this competition, it hasn't mattered.
What if it did? What if we had jobs that required 100, 200, 300, 400 of a skill? What if those jobs dropped items that required "mega" skill?
Would it unbalance the game? I don't think so. Jay has done a pretty good job at trying to balance out competitions, and I think this would only further work to balance things out. How do you remove point pooling? Give them a reason to spend the points.
Sprinkles and Kasumi here have some pretty interesting ideas, and we have locations throughout the game that could help already. nothing is there, they currently need hunting 50 to get there, and could be very interesting places in the near future.

Once I was sure that anything that needed 50 was taken care of, I spent the bulk of my points in Kenjutsu. I put far more than I should have had in investigation, so Kenjutsu has suffered, but the idea of high end jobs becoming prevalent at the cost of a high amount of skill is appealing. I would easily get any magistrate position, that's how I made my character. I suppose we'll see if not saving points gets any bonuses.

I personally agree that more high-end missions (in terms of requirements, not necessarily of costs, as has been the recent tendency) would be good to create an end-game feeling. For example, when I had a much smaller Level, I enjoyed Reihado Shinsei a lot because it felt like the end of the game, or at least of a story arc.

Soul item: Fu-Leng's PawnRequires: 100 Taint, +25 Shadowlands/Lore, +300 Taint Soul? I gave that thing away years ago....That look like a good equivalent?

Another idea I have been toying with is a champions board for skills. I've asked for this before, but now it can encourage people to spend their points so they can be on the top.

I would be all for this. It wouldn't be too hard to implement, and could be great fun
