The last time they did a time jump was when O-Ushi Died. Now Kuon is dead it makes sense. Wow the empire really does revolve around the Crab huh?

Hey as long as the Lion aren't getting the short end of the stick I'm happy. Even if we aren't the center of attention.

All too often, being the center of attention leads to the short end coming.

As long as there is a Shadowlands, there will be Crab to stand against it.

the crab are a favorite of mine, i played lion because i really wanted to explore them, and frankly i feel as though they are forced almost to be the republicans of rokugan which really sucks cause they have many interesting roleplaying aspects to them. Honestly unless you're playing one, who actually likes the lion?

No one, in fact almost all the players in my RPG group never do anything with the Lion, aside from my character being a Lion. And when the Lion do show up, they are relegated to stereotypes or villains.

I played a Lion deck at the topaz Championship, and made it to the finals, but i agree in the rpg, they are always sold as villains, warmongers and stuffed shirts. the absolute biggest thing i see them as though, duel fodder. For whatever the reason there is always some brash lion ready to draw steel and die or at least lose so our groups duelist can get a duel or take a head... In fact in the last game i played the most high profile duel was against Shigetoshi.

Me and my playgroup say L5R is a samurai soap opera. We play cards and RPG, both of which I've done for a long time. It is kind of a wonder that there's any empire at all. Sure, for 1000 years they had a pretty good thing going. Then they made a game out of it, and since then there's needed to be a storyline, which means conflict. Believe me, trying to explain the L5R storyline to outsiders, it's good that they fight someone else from time to time. It gets too confusing explaining that this or that happened this other time everyone was fighting each other. And seriously, a nation of people so prejudice and xenophobic that they have serious bigotry with people from a different region. I'm from Florida, and that's like me being prejudice against people from Ohio, and I kill people from Canada. Like, seriously prejudice. Also, to the points made against Spider Clan advisers and such, there's a certain unpredictability involved since they put a lot of decisions like that in our (the players, at least CCG) hands. ANd you have to expect a certain amount of people going out of their way to do stuff for the Spider just cause it doesn't fit. (Who seriously thinks the Spider Clan should raise the Imperial Heir? It's just funny, or alternative, or whatever.) But for selfish reasons, I don't want the Spider Clan to go anywhere. I play Scorpion dishonor, which is only viable because no one can play Shadowlands and have their stronghold say something like "You don't gain or lose honor" or "You cannot lose by Dishonor" or "Screw over the Scorpion every day!" In fact and not surprisingly, Spider is usually an easy dishonor match. They really had a good chance in my opinion with the Toturi dynasty. It was a stabilizing factor. There never should have been a 4 Winds arc. They had a non-partial Emperor and could have just moved on. BTW 4th Ed is awesome. I was running 3rd Revised but jumped at the opportunity to convert to 4th. It's way more balanced, and I don't have to send god-crushing enemies at my party to be able to scratch the toughest guys while annihilating the weaker ones.

Thats good to hear about 4th ed. I am about to start in a 4th game and was concerned about that. Can you tell me if they fixed my biggest complaint? Example: Ok its your turn. I will be rolling ten dice and keeping eight. i find and count out my lucky ten dice and shake them up. i let them clatter to the table re rolling the three dice that inevitably fell off the table. I start counting and see there are a few tens. I reroll the tens. Now i add all my kept dice by basically counting to ninety four. Then I add my extraneous modifer from emphasis, school techniques and katas and get a number. The number is retardedly high so my gm asks me to prove it, so i go re do all the math after arguing that tens were tens and i have since rerolled them. Then my gm asks me for my raises i had called and how many were free and how many were not free and i subtract 5 for each non free raise. i get a final number and my gm tells me if it hit. it does. I now calculate what my raises are used for which is almost always damage (except for the dreaded extra attack). I now count up my damage dice. not before calculating my damage dice a new every time since the number of raises varies with each roll. So i determine that i will be rolling eight keep five. I roll my choice lucky eight dice. sort them. find the tens. re roll the tens. basically count to thirty seven. add my raw add ons from technique and kata etc. spout out my total damage of 48. My gm deliberates if the bad guy spends a void to reduce damage or activates a damage mitigating effect and the final damage is applied to the bad guys damage track.
Now i make my second attack. (repeat rediculous process) Now the next guy at the table goes through the same process and so on through the other five players.
I kid you not, once after my turn finished i went and walked my dog, went out to the corner grease trap to get food, waited for it to be cooked, stopped by the kwiki stop for drinks. brought it home, ate it, threw away the trash, emptied the trash readjusted the soundtrack to our game, cleaned the living room, went to the bathroom and returned and it wasnt even close to my turn yet.
TL;DR: The rolling mechanic takes too long.

Having just gotten into 4th edition (and still playing a Rank 1 character) and never played any other edition of the RPG, that still seems pretty accurate. Combat does take a while. I've been thinking of writing up a quick program to do all of that for me, including exploding 10's and Emphasis.
Of course, it wouldn't be very practical to me because I don't have a laptop, so I wouldn't have much use for it. Still, I could probably do this in an hour at least.

We use an online dice roller, that does the rolling for us. Saves some time, but combat does drag a bit, but not as bad as I've seen in other games.

Actually, I just found one that was already made a few years ago. sourceforge.net/projects/l5rdiceroller/But I know for 4th edition you can re-roll 1's if you have an Emphasis, so I suppose I could make something that was a bit more compatible for 4th edition. It'd either be significantly less graphically-fancy than this (black box with white text) or something maybe nicer, but much larger in size (XNA is where I have most of my programming experience).

Dice roller don't beat the real thing, honestly combat in 4th ed doesn't take that long after you've done about 4 skirmishes, after that your group knows what they are doing. Also keep in mind stances, the key to combat in L5R RPG is murder your opponent as soon as possible. I've played a rank one Crab whose average damage roll was a 39, that will grease or incapacitate nigh any bandit. By Rank 2 I was cranking out about 45 damage on average, it just gets brutal really quick. Quick tips if your a bushi have an Agility of a 3 minimum, if you go first and there aren't many opponents; full attack stance, make sure you know the uses of your void points, also don't deviate from your schools abilities you'll regret it, there are plenty of options in the game. Other then that have fun.
