yeah L5R is supposed to be a deadly game. Combat is no joke. It was worse in 1st ed. 4th ed seems great in that aspect so far. Rolls still get pretty high, though, but that's how its supposed to be. Combat should be short. The ridiculous amount of rolling is cut down significantly, and they made it harder to do a second attack with raises(you need 5 now, and with the simplified rolling that's harder), and schools don't offer extra attacks anymore. Instead, there's a system for complex and simple actions and stances with appropriate actions. Schools then offer at a certain rank that attacks with a type of weapon, or types of attacks (based on keywords, interestingly enough, kinda moving toward the CCG here, also applies to spells) simple actions instead of complex. They also have almost done away with Free Raises, which is the simgle biggest improvement in my opinion. Also you can't regain Void by rolling 2 tens in a roll, so everyone doesn't have wildly fluctuating Void and they use points every action. The number of Void spent in a round is reduced, and applied to your entire turn, not each action. And Emphasis lets you re-roll 1s instead of bonuses. All around it tones things down, simplifies them, and balances character types.

I never considered it Skirmish level. I suppose you have to define skirmish for me to answer that.

Are you controlling like Warhammer; numbers of an average game can exceed a 100 models, or Malifaux; where an average game doesn't exceed 10 models (both sides.)

Sorry for needing the clarification but Warmachine/Hordes is also billed as a skirmish game but most often winds up being an epic one.

Well Warmachine was originally intended to be a skirmish game and for awhile it was, and then they started taking business from Gamesworkshop, and they started marketing more along the lines of Warhammer. Hence the game we have today, shite happens, their all good in their own ways.

I have good news, for me, My Kotei Deck keeps getting better and better. Only one more card from where "I" want it to be. After that comes more playtesting and thinning out "craptastic" cards.

I've been paying the CCG for a decade. I used to be competitive but I've started to be more casual since the end of last year.

I don't play the rpg but I've read quite a number of the sourcebooks.

Right there with Kaymar. I love Crab Scouts but damn, do I suck at military timing. I was hoping for Kaiu honor but Yasuki Dishonor will have to do.

Mostly, though? RPG junkie here. I'm crazy enough to be one of the regular PbP crowd, not just as one of the players but to have actually GM'd a handful of the things.

Not an errand for the faint-hearted.
