OOC - Naseru (and Sezaru) were my two winds I played in the CCG. - I prefer court actions over combat actions. - I was impatient and didnt want to do another 50 actions for honor and I really wanted to get Enlightenment and Kenku Technique.
IC - The Scorpion Champion declared support for Toturi and Hisa believed it was a front to appease his allies. Publicly freed of his responsibilities to his clan, Hisa took it upon himself to be one of Senshis eyes within Hanteis court.

...OOC I got Kaneka as a sworn enemy back during that whole sworn enemy debacle just for "questioning" him taking on the title of Shogun himself. I then looked up on the wiki who Kaneka and Hantei were. Kaneka would make a horrible emperor, he's headstrong, power hungry, vindictive and really not all that bright. Naseru is also the emperor that personally defeated Fu Leng and that goes a long way to speak to his credibility. As a Scorpion Naseru just seems to fit a hell of a lot better. Besides, Scorpion Clan hasn't done well with Rebellions in the past.

OOC - I have two Sworn Enemy: Kaneka
IC - The Empire must be united. If the Emperor has flaws, then skilled subordinates can compensate for that. By rebelling, Kaneka has destroyed any semblance of Unity and weakens the Empire far more than having a flawed Emperor might. Also any person who will allow himself to be manipulated the way Kaneka has been is certainly not someone Shagi wishes to follow.

OOC- I love Naseru's style over Kaneka's!
IC- Naetaru has always had an affinity for the status quo. He considers himself loyal to the core even to the point of death. Considering his background (deprived childhood) he regards everything from a point he considers as "mature". Even if a proper Rokugani, he is as passionate with his choices as everyone and whereas he may feel doubt over his own choice, he doesn't back down.

This is Rokugan!
Kaneka has a sword and an army! The so called-emporer fled the city with his katana between his kimono!
Rokugan needs a strong leader not a proped up paper-samurai!
----
VOTE KANEKA! Kaneka for office! Take Durão Barroso off the EU commitee, Merkel off chanceler, Deport Sarkozy and fire Jean-Claude trichet! Put Kaneka on the job!
Sorry, us kaneka fan-boys are highly excitable because our leader is KANEKA !

OOC: I support the sitting emperor. I was a Tsudao follower during the winds era. Sezaru had the right claim, but did not wish to rule so I discarded him. Naseru was both youngest and trained by a power paraniod tyrant. She exibited all that was in a Samurai, and Rokugan is the lesser for her sacrifice. Kaneka was never recognized by Toturi, he had no claim.
IC: Same as in the OOC plus Nesaru is the rightful ruler, while Kaneka is in open rebellion. (It's funny to notice that Kaneka and all his followers would lose a full RANK of Honor for rebelling against a status 10 superior.)

This kind of argument makes Kaneka lose a lot of respect from my point of view So, he just managed to grab the kind of follower who go with the mob flow? Explains a lot anyway. OOC reason: All my friends and clansman decided for Hantei. I don't care much. But I found some reasons here very interesting. IC: Daimyou commanded me to. Such a simple bushi life. I specially like Mai's point of view. Yuuka also lost parents at MWK, and a little after that she was stuck serving with the moveless Emerald Army. Would be nice to have a IC talk sometime

OOC: I had to give it a thought. By the time he made his claim, I had been a loyal follower of the shogun since day one, had him as an ally, had one of his counsellors as an ally and had quite a few favors from him left. Although I was a Tsudao supporter way back when, I liked his character as the guy who had everything to prove and raised up to the challenge. That is, however, irrelevant in the end in my vision of Rokugan. Naseru is the sitting Emperor, the chosen of Heavens, and that's the end of it: deposing an emperor is such a heinous act that it's happened exactly twice in the history of Rokugan, once when he was the god of Evil and once when he was a bloodthirsty insane tyrant, to a point that Naseru can never hope to match, and even then there were lots of atonement seppukku afterwards. On the other hand, the Empire has at least two families who have been tasked at some times with covering for the Emperor's failings (the Ikoma and the Shosuro, as pointed out in the Way of the Scorpion). In my book, making the Emperor a puppet with no political power can be accepted if it's for the good of the Empire (see the Japanese Shogun for reference). Usurping the Emperor is treason to the utmost. If I wanted to neglect this kind of cultural factors, I guess I would be playing another game. Besides, being a great general and a mighty warrior is not the role of the Emperor. It's the shogun's role. Being a great shogun doesn't mean you should be Emperor. IC: Togashi Enishi supported Naseru for the above reasons. Ninube Enishi supports Naseru because he thinks corruption of the Celestial Order is the prime reason that the whole world should be unmade.

Post by Morito Asuka on Oct 12, 2011 14:47:48 GMT -5
I am officially remaining neutral, but unofficially supporting Kaneka.
OOC strict: I think it would be an interesting twist to see how events turn with Kaneka on the throne instead of Naseru. It probably wont be a peaceful time considering he's wind of war, but hey, Naseru shouldn't have used ninja and yobanjin to try to kill him. OOC observational: My character's damiyo, Lord Morito, is Master Steel. Considering the Kolat already tried to kill naseru once in 1159, and the Ox clan is heavily infiltrated by kolat. My character is not yet one of those, but though she doesn't yet know it, her father has been conditioning her to become one from the time she was born. She is, in effect, a sleeper agent until she is valuable enough to include her in their ranks.
It might not need to be stated that the kolat HATE the Hantei. To have an emperor who takes the kami's name on the throne is antithetical to everything they stand for. Kolats believe that man should not be ruled by the kami. It doesn't matter that Naseru was born from a Toturi womb. his name is Hantei, and he is a hantei emperor, and thus inherits all the power, history, and associations that go with the name. Names are powerful things in Rokugan. A toturi who is adopted into the hantei line is a Hantei, just as surely as a man who marries into the Doji family is a Doji, or a person who is cast out of a clan loses his name and becomes a rankless ronin, or a person who tires of being a samurai may go join a minestary and "die" as himself to become a monk. Who you are born to only matters if the right people, or spirits, or Kami say it matters. for an emperor, only the Kami get to remind people that he was Toturi. To the empire and in the minds of people, he is Hantei without question. The problem with where the Ox is located in the empire is not a very tactical position for an official declaration. WE're on the Dragon Heart Plain, wedged between the phoenix and the Dragon, both of which are hantei supporters. We are away from all of the other minor clans, and we have vested interest in everyone else turning a blind eye to our lands, considering the hidden temple is there, the very HQ of the Kolat, including the Oni's Eye nemuranai.
Since they have that, they have unparalelled surveillance over the empire. Morito would know the best time to attack, or to declare based on his intel. Since declaring for Kaneka would bring war and attention to his lands, it's best for him to remain officially neutral, since he can't by his own secret philosophy, declare support for Hantei.
So it's best to have the empire think we are just a simple minor clan with no delusions, trying to maintain our lands while the Major Clans decide the fate of our Empire. To officially declare for Kaneka would make us easily and quickly snuffed as traitors. On the back side of that, there are probably Ox spies and Kolat from other clans working tirelessly to undermine Naseru and weaken him so that he fails to keep the throne.
IC: Asuka follows the order of her Damiyo: There shall be no war in his province until morito declares otherwise. This means that not only should there not be war there unless there are orders to do so, but that she should not do something in any other province that would bring war TO the province and force Lord Morito's hand.
No matter if she supports kaneka or not, she still has not been given an order to declare for either officially, and so she declares for neither. Basically, she would support Kaneka, if supporting him would not mean war and swift destruction upon her clan, and she would rightly support Hantei, as he is the emperor as mandated by the heavens, but for the fact that the emperor has turned his back on every major clan that have been our allies, namely the lion, the Unicorn, and the Mantis.

OOC: I counciled that we wait for the Emperor to make a decision and then supported the Kakita Daimyo earning me two Sworn Enemies, so I read the Wiki and decided Kaneka is a raving egomaniac with a huge chip on his shoulder that prefers the comforting lies of his henchmen rather than the truth.
IC: These are the facts: - Kaneka is not the trueborn hier of Toturi I - Kaneka lost in the challenge of the Four Winds to Naseru and his trueborn half-siblings - Kaneka swore an oath surrendering his claim to the throne. - Kaneka, like his half brother Sezaru, were welcomed into the Phoenix Clan. Where Sezaru joined the Isawa family, Kaneka refused to accept ANY of our Families as his own.
While the current Emperor is not a blood descendant of Emperor-Kami Hantei, Tengoku has made no overt signs of its displeasure with Emperor Hantei XL. That Kaneka has used spurious claims that he has not backed up with any witness testimony or other proof to break his vows to his half-brother. I would fight and die to prevent such an oathbreaker from claiming the throne barring direct revelations from Tengoku itself that they desire Kaneka to replace Hantei the 40th.

OOC: I didn't know the story and I didn't have any opinion about Kaneka nor Naseru. I wanted to play with my first L5R character and she is kind of freaky about her clan. she would definitelly support whoever her clan decide to support.
so it was.
and then I realized playing with that character would be pretty difficult so I created Homura (maybe the old one will become npc later). a bit too late to change side...
IC: Homura isn't important enough for her opinion to count anywhere. she was just ment to follow orders. she knows that what they do can be called rebelling but she didn't want to fight her brothers and sisters. and well, she didn't like that Naseru changed his name. he was denying his roots by taking the name of man who banished his father and disbanded his family plus she respects Kaneka for what he did during the Yobanjin war

Interesting topic! IC: Takezo - long, long before there was any hint of Hantei/Toturi strife (indeed, before Toturi was mentioned in EE) - was always very vocal in his contempt for the grip the "courtiers" had on Rokugani culture and politics. People might recall his ardent opposition to trade, for example, because it simply lined pockets and paved the way for moral corruption. He detested opium culture, drinking, endless "art competitions", and everything else that he felt exemplified the weakening on the Samurai spirit. He never blamed this on the Emperor, however. When Toturi came along - a true soldier - the idea began to germinated in Takezo's mind that what Rokugan needed was a warrior Emperor, and beyond that it needed strife to burn away the weakness. At first it was simply the Yobanjin war (which Takezo eagerly sought), but even that was mostly an outwardly-directed conflict; no, what Rokugan needed was civil war, a saga or fire and bloodshed that would remind samurai what really mattered - bushido - and would leave the brothels, opium dens, fancy gardens, libraries filled with decadent poetry, trading emporia all in cinders. He wanted (well, wants) a cleansing of the world. Moreover, Takezo *wanted* this to be the Dragon's moment - the Dragon, a spiritual warrior people who eschew material luxuries, seemed to be the best hope for guiding Rokugan back to its roots. tl;rd version: The status quo of Rokugan must be swept away and replaced with the warrior culture it should rightfully be, correctly implementing bushido. OOC: In any game (as in any novel - games are a mode of interactive novel, anyway), conflict generates interest. My play decisions are based on establishing conflict between Takezo and his world. The world accepts decadent courtly life? Takezo embraces asceticism; the world is complacently at peace? Takezo advocates war; his own clan goes one way? Takezo bends the other, even breaking away of need be. Conflict!

his own clan goes one way? Takezo bends the other, even breaking away of need be. Conflict! That's funny, you didn't seem so keen on the idea of breaking away from your Clan earlier. I guess sometimes you've got to make a virtue of a necessity huh.
