The plug-ins idea sounds great, I just do not know what they all are yet so I can not really say one way or the other.
As far as story goes, while the idea of continuing appeals to those of us who were heavily involved. It could be a turnoff for attracting new players. I would imagine that most would not find the idea rather inviting, if they were told "read these threads so you can catch up with all the ways we changed the story, and now you will have to live with their decisions, of which you had no influence over." I remember it being one of the problems we run into before we we began to diverge from the cannon story arc. It could be dangerous ground if we write for ourselves and not a wider audience.
I like the original idea of the game, which was pick a cannon story arc and let players take it in a new direction. You will have the potential to draw in a lot more fans that way, and allow everyone to start on a fresh clean slate.
Further if players wish to continue their characters from the old game there would be nothing preventing that. Whilst it is those events which defined our characters, new beginnings and new obstacles can be a challenge, and the empire is a big place that has the capacity to tell a great number of stories.

I like the idea of a backstory that takes less two paragraphs or less to summarize. References to past events can be oblique enough that new people won't need much backstory but there can be easter eggs for people in the know. Like a shrine to Usagi Luo, a minor fortune of heroic tales. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Nods to the previous story and characters would be great, I just want to make sure that new players and returning players are given an equal footing. Besides were we left off the story line was rather far afield from the cannon L5R story, which might not appeal to the average player.

Well, we're coming to a headway with ideas for the story with about 4 different setting ideas that we'd like to vote on before developing them any further. If someone could create a poll where we can vote on these options, that would be (as they say in the parlance) awesome.
Our 4 options are as follows: 1.) Sequel to Emerald Empire with an entire generation gap. 2.) Sequel to Emerald Empire with less than 10 years gap. 3.) Setting based on original L5R with minor departure from canon. 4.) Setting based on L5R with a significant departure from canon. (thousand years of darkness, rokugan 2k, etc.)

I would like to cast my vote for a generational gap. Like some others on the board, this was the last meaningful RP I've had, with work, school, and family crowding out the normal face-to-face games I used to run. Not incidently, I have a growing stock of scenerios. I'd be happy to pitch in with the storytellers.

So, you may have heard the name, John Wick. He was one of the major original designers of the L5R rpg. Ten years after he finished up that project he made another game called Blood & Honor. It's supposed to be about Samurai Drama in Old Japan (or at least that's the tag line). It's a really fun game with a simpler ruleset than L5R. Do a google search for "Blood and Honor RPG".
Anyway, I was wondering if we could co-opt some of the rules there for use in an online RPG. In particular, using a lot of the ideas we already have, we could change the stats from five rings to a number of samurai virtues that a person is good or bad at. Those stats could be tracked in signatures rather than mini profiles and just kept by individual players. there's much less book keeping that way and we can cut down on the number of plug ins we need to create.
Just a thought.

There is also a game named Qin: Warring States, that may be useful, simple rules.
