I'm just surprised the best we can see in a kenjutsu competition is 945... Seems so far away from what Spellcraft contests are showing...

Its because there has been no "arms race" scenario with Kenjutsu as there was with spellcraft up until now.

I've spent the whole game building up kenjutsu just for this kind of things, and I retired in a monastery thinking the game would end just before I had the occasion to use it (and yeah, the 77 Meditation is NOT a.problem. At all).

you can do it Hiro! All I needed was 25 natural points in order to equip everything (Enlightenment was the big one that put me over). Now, my kenjutsu only got up to 103, so it looks like I'm...70th in line to be a thunder. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Well, I've read everything in this thread, and I'd certainly like to make this as fair as possible.
Ultimately I put a Spellcraft contest at Drowned Merchant River because the Phoenix are there in force, and this represents their power. I matched this with Horsemanship since the Unicorn are present in force on the Toturi side. (I considered adding a Battle contest but I figured we had already done one at the previous battle and people had been complaining that Battle was over-used.)
I put Kenjutsu and Spellcraft contests at Fortress of the Forgotten because I want everyone to be able to participate in the "Day of Thunder" and I figure all bushi have Kenjutsu and all shugenja have Spellcraft.
In hindsight I see that the player base has extremely high Spellcraft compared to all other skills, which skews the outcome, but this was my original rationale for these actions.
-----
I don't want to change things around TOO much, and I don't want to invalidate anyone's actions. But based on feedback, this is what I plan to do:
* I removed the requirements for "Ally: Kyoso no Oni" and "Ally: Oni no Akuma" from the two oni lord actions. I see now that it is disproportionally hurtful to split the Spider Clan into two factions, so I'm going to allow them to perform both actions if desired.
* Since the battles at Drowned Merchant River and Fortress of the Forgotten are occurring simultaneously, if any player is on the high score list of more than one contest, I will only count their highest score, and will omit their lower scoring entry from the other contest. (Whomever is #11 on that contest will be pushed upwards into the top 10 for purposes of scoring.)
* I'm going to leave the Force bonus for the heroic sacrifice actions unchanged. It's admittedly rather lower than is probably fair but (a) a lot of people have already thrown away their characters' lives at this reward level and (b) it's really a roleplaying decision and I don't want to bribe anyone to spend their lives if it's not what their character would really do -- it should STILL be a valid roleplaying choice to retire to a monastery, or run off to guard the remnants of your house after the civil war, or go marry that hot Crane chick, or whatever YOUR character would do. As I see it, death actions are where YOU the players are writing the end of the story for YOUR character.
* I don't plan to add a heroic sacrifice action for the Shadowlands side because...welll...I don't really see it as being their style. They prefer to sacrifice YOUR life for their cause.
I hope that all seems reasonable. Thanks for all the input.

...The only counting the highest of the two is horrible. People have already competed and had no control over which is higher. You've taken away their choice of what battle to participate in. People also can't see beyond the top 10 in either contest, so there's no clue what those numbers are anymore. Everything else is fine, but you can't make the change about where people are participating after the fact. It's completely unfair to the participants in those competitions.

It really does not matter. The game is coming to an end, and whatever the outcomes, the ride was fun getting there.
People, does it really matter whether Kaneka's army is annihilated or Shoju teaches us all a lesson? With all the complaining, it would be better to just never come to a conclusion at all and let the individual decide what ultimately went down.

Thx for listening to the arguments Jay. I think it's a good call.
Arorou raises a good point that merits consideration.

They can simply choose which battle they wish to participate in, and keep clicking until they have a higher score.
Is it perfect? No, it's not. Does it make sense thematically? Yes. Yes it does. Does it mean that I think I'm going to lose and Kaneka now has a chance? Yeah....... probably.
And thank you Jay

Does it mean that I think I'm going to lose and Kaneka now has a chance? Yeah....... probably. And thank you Jay If it is any consolation, in my imagination, after Kaneka dies ignobly in the shallows of the drowned merchant river, the pyrrhic victory by Hantei forces ensures a thousand years of darkness envelop the land as the Crab and Scorpion fall from your tainted onslaught. Live the dream.
